Matsuo Bashō (松尾 芭蕉, 1644–1694) was the most famous poet of the Edo period in Japan, today, after centuries of commentary, he is recognized as the greatest master of haiku (then called hokku). His poetry is internationally renowned. The impressionistic and concise nature of Bashō's verse greatly influenced Ezra Pound, the Imagists, and poets of the Beat Generation including Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, and especially Jack Kerouac—composed some fine haiku in the middle of the century.
