This mask was made by an average person to save money, or make a little extra. Despite its crudeness, I like it a lot. I’m also happy to see, for the first time, a mask from Majuli, Assam. Even though masquerade is quite important in the world’s second largest country, I don’t get to see the masks or costumes very often. Nor do I know of any good book about them. If you know of such a book, please share the title and author’s name with us. Indian masks used by professional dancers can be…

This beautiful mask is called a Moghondzi and used mostly at funeral ceremonies. It appears to be authentic and has developed a nice patina over the years. Don’t expect to find something like this in a thrift shop. Interesting fact: the Bwiti people, who live across the border in southern Cameroon, use masks that closely resemble the photo you see. It’s an example of how design ideas are sometimes influenced by nearby cultures. There are so many different tribes in Africa that we see a lot…

Q: Here are several photos from Suchitlan, including an old photograph of the Morenos who are all wearing the masks made by Don Herminio. Pablo, 898 A: The first photo is a coyote by the master maskmaker, Herminio Candelario of Suchitlan, Colima, in western Mexico. His father and his sons were/and are well known makers, but he was, in my opinion, the Picasso of Mexican masks. A+ The second is an old photo of the big celebrations in Suchitlan’s Fiesta of the Animals. This revelry is in…

MasksoftheWorld.com has been on the internet for a long time. As the Mask Man I look at several hundred Mystery Masks every year. Most of them are poorly made “tourist masks” and they always look old and used. I answer the emails but hardly ever post them for you to see. Fakes don’t interest me much. When I saw this beautiful Vaquero on Google I wanted to share it with you. This is what an authentic old-used (Guatemalan) mask should look like. Enlarge it and check out the details. It has…

Indian Masks, Indian Mask, Cardboard Relief, Devil Mask, Mexican Mask, Goat Horns, Monster Mask, Central American, Antique Shop

Q: I’ve had this mask in my collection for quite some time now. I found it at a local antique shop for $60.The mask itself measures about 9.5 inches excluding the length of the horns. The horns have been nailed on the mask, and look like real goat horns.I have always believed it to be some kind of hand carved Diablo mask judging by the inside of it. What do you think? Blake, 1170 A: Your mask is a Diablo (Devil) from the state of Totonicapan in WestCentral Guatemala. On pages 252-5 of…
