Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis), at Rua do Jasmineiro, close to the Casino, Funchal, Madeira Island Spring is a magic season on Madeira Island. Each flower brings its own colour of the rainbow and Wisteria are not an exception, framing many garden walls and fences around the island. This is the mother of almost all Wisteria sinensis plants outside of Asia. 

Yes, there are a couple of other species in horticulture, but the vast, vast majority of plants you see across the globe are not just from a single variety, but clones of one genetic individual that was given to the world from the garden of a Chinese tea trader. 

I did quite of lot of research and found a potential contender for ‘Consequa’ using Chinese sources, Pan Changyao 潘長耀. It’s a shame that he never got the credit for the beauty he has given to so many.

Chinese wisteria (Latin Wisteria sinensis). Ornamental woody plant, a species of dicotyledonous flowering plants of the genus Wisteria (Wisteria) of the Legume family (Fabaceae). Woody liana, reaching 20-25 m in height. Stems twisted counterclockwise, young twigs covered with whitish pubescence, then exposed.
