A university business incubator transfers ideas developed in the academic world to new ventures capable of taking their place in the business world. An important influence in history has been the economic development in Silicon Valley. To create companies from the best ideas emerging from research and education is a component of the trust placed on the academic world to develop commercial activity. This thesis focuses on the university-based business incubators (UBIs) that have emerged in western Sweden. These 13 incubators, which constitute component parts of the same regional innovation system, are investigated as to when and how ideas from the academic world become new businesses in the incubator and the process of moving away from such. Special attention is devoted to where the business finds its place in the incubator and in the business world. In this study the activity of the business incubator has been observed as a knowledge process; a meeting between business knowledge and technological knowhow within the space provided by the business incubator. The question was how the activities constituting this knowledge process are related to the spatial structure. The aim has been to contribute to knowledge about how the built environment can support incubator activities by drawing attention to the opportunities and problems that those that utilise incubator space have. Furthermore, how this in turn contributes to establishing and changing regional innovation systems. This task has been carried out by investigating these thirteen business incubators and by formulating texts for publication that discuss the concepts to use and that gradually interpret the findings of the investigation. Firstly, one of the incubators was investigated in depth. Then, based on the observations made here, the remaining twelve were studied. Interviews and discussions have provided the foundation in these studies. I have taken it in turn to interview business facilitators and entrepreneurs in order to understand how their knowledge is encountered in each incubator. In addition, at meetings, I have had continual discussions with business facilitators and with persons responsible for the built environment and service in the incubators. These meetings have been organised within the framework of a regional network where the aim is to develop competence among those working to provide support for developing the businesses in the incubator. The findings from the first investigation of one incubator were presented in my licentiate thesis (Strid 2004). I have written six articles for international conferences, three as part of the licentiate work and three as part of the thesis work for the PhD. My studies of the business incubators have their foundation in research on architecture and research related to the establishment of new businesses. This has involved a search to understand both how the built environment interacts with the birth of new companies and how research about space and business activity in general can be connected to the specific activity at the incubator. ii The conclusions are that the constructed space is one component of the process of taking ones place that is required in order to establish business praxis. The constructed space also anchors down the innovation system as a support system rather than a business-oriented system. The built environment can also contribute to establishing a broader view on entrepreneurship and innovation systems.

Major public investments are being made today to support business development, especially those that are anticipated to germinate from advanced technological competence development associated with universities and their interacting business environments. University business incubators are an important component in this effort. They are environments especially designed to support the generation of business developed in research and education. In West Sweden eight business incubators with university connections are being developed. The first one was the incubator at Chalmers University of Technology, Chalmers Innovation that today has grown to become a recognised business incubator.

Compact cities are promoted by global and local policies in response to environmental, economic and social challenges. It is argued that increased density and diversity of urban functions and demographics are expected to deliver positive outcomes. ‘Emerged’ urban area which have developed incrementally seem to exhibit such dense and diverse characteristics, acquired through adaptation by multiple actors over time and space. Today, ‘design-based’ planning approaches aim to create the same characteristics here and now. An example of such is the City of Gothenburg, Sweden, which strives to involve multiple actors to ‘design’ urban density and mixed use, but with unsatisfactory outcomes. There is reason to investigate in what way current planning approaches need modification to better translate policy goals into reality. At the newly started Centre for Urban Studies in a stigmatized suburb of Gothenburg, the academic fields of teaching, social work and architecture are collaborating with the local community. This cooperation is part of the Centre's mission, which is to work with widening participation in higher education, developing professions, and focusing on the role of citizens in urban design. The collaboration is also part of the research project Urban Empowerment funded by Mistra Urban Futures. The present paper will discuss the potential of working with urban empowerment by using students as engines -linking education, research and community outreach -and reflect on the accompanying problems and possibilities.

Transdisciplinary research, integrating practice and academia, and including citizens as knowledge producers in urban development processes can lead to successful community empowerment in urban design. In such approaches, citizens are considered community builders and therefore are invited by the authorities to build knowledge by codesigning artifacts in urban space. This paper will present experiences from a Swedish project in the context of stigmatized outskirts of metropolitan areas, where inhabitants have been involved in codesigning a stage in a local park, to be built during the winter 2012/13. The project is carried out as part of a municipal project called 'Development Gothenburg Northeast' funded by the European Union and supported by a research project called 'INTERPLACE-The interplay between citizen initiatives and invited participation in urban planning' funded by Formas.

Detta kapitel ingår i boken »I trygghetens namn» (2010) med Ingrid Sahlin som redaktör, I föregående kapitel »Tre bostadsområden: Olika typer av governance» fokuserade jag på de typer av partnerskap som utvecklats till följd av den s.k. trygghetsvågen i samhället. I detta andra kapitel inom disciplinen arkitektur/planering undersöker jag temat invånarnas medverkan i partnerkap för trygghet. I vilken utsträckning är invånare involverade i partnerskapen? På vilka sätt är de inblandade? Finns det grupper som istället är exkluderade? Och varför är dessa frågor viktig att belysa ur ett arkitektur-och planeringsperspektiv?

Suburban metropolitan areas in Sweden built in the fifties, sixties and seventies are often considered exposed areas and consequently involved in interventions aimed at dealing with problems such as unemployment, poverty and social exclusion. This paper, which is built on the results from a thesis within the field of planning and sustainable development (Stenberg 2004b), focuses on how urban planning is related to this social problem.

Flera personer har varit involverade i utvärderingen i olika grad under arbetets gång. Analys av materialet samt allt textförfattande förutom fallbeskrivningarna har gjorts av tekn.dr. Jenny Stenberg, som arbetat under hela projektperioden och också varit projektledare, i samarbete med tekn.dr. Liane Thuvander, som kom in i projektet under de sista tre månaderna. Tekn.dr.
