One of the things we used to do as kids that will forever be embedded as a strong sense-memory in my brain is on nights with a full moon in deep winter, my siblings and I would layer up in all our snow gear and march out onto the middle of the frozen lake, sit down in a circle and tell ghost stories. No flashlights, no lanterns, just the moonlight bouncing off acres and acres of white and the wind howling; the bite of sub-zero air and the stark clarity of starlight in a high frozen atmosphere. You tell yourself that nothing can sneak up to you on open ice but the snow snaking in the wind makes it seem like things are moving all around you, sneaking low and flat and casting strange pale shadows. Sometimes the snow made sound go dead and still but you could still hear the ice under it all, and the resonance of it made us speak in whispers only. And when our fingers and toes started to go numb and we ran out of stories, we’d slide-march our way back home over the ice again, and half-believe that whatever monsters we had made up were following us back over the endless ice.

This is completly false. Rabbit shut down because they had no business model, were making no money whatsoever, and went bankrupt. What Rabbit did (host and stream remote-control virtual machines) is not inherently illegal by any means.
Hyperbeam is the exact same thing and I’ve been using it for years for perfectly legal activities – you can display maps for d&d games, have youtube watch parties, play tag-team neopets, whatever you like. It has full access to the internet, so could someone do illegal things? Probably. But you could also do illegal things with your normal web browser. Not my problem.
Unlike Rabbit, Hyperbeam has a side-hustle (main-hustle?) offering more advanced virtual machines to businesses and schools, so they do actually make money and should stick around longer.

A large part of the reason families were bigger in the past was because marital rape was not considered rape and birth control/abortion methods were ineffective, dangerous and/or illegal. We can dance around this and act like our great great great grandmothers just loveddddd being mamas so much that they decided out of their own free will to have 11 children. We can pretend that they DECIDED to have big families because it was a financially advantageous decision so they could have more labor around the farm. But a lot of children in the past were fundamentally unwanted and not conceived out of love, children were not a choice women got to make. We need to admit that and stop pretending historical women were inherently more maternal because they were impregnated at the age of 15 and kept having babies until they were 40. That did not make them loving mothers, it did not make them ‘the divine feminine’ and it sure did not make them happy.
