Her computer graphics activities have progressively covered different fields, ranging from scientific visualisation, forensic applications (www.cineca.it/en/content/senna-car-accident ). Virtual Reality, 3D film making (e.g. Apa l' etrusco, Fiamp Unesco award), open digital ecosystems for cultural contents. Here we will report our experience of using and deploying tools to help the collaborative process... more Here we will report our experience of using and deploying tools to help the collaborative process of small scale digital productions such as short movies, museum interactive application, web sites in the CH domain. We will report tools adopted, alternatives, actual deployment, collected user feedback and future development. This is the result of IT support for one internal CH production (APA movie) as well as for a a widespread community within VMUST project.

The problem of rebuilding a face from human remains has been, until now, especially relevant in t... more The problem of rebuilding a face from human remains has been, until now, especially relevant in the ambit of forensic sciences, where it is obviously oriented toward the identification of otherwise unrecognizable corpses; but its potential interest to archaeologists and anthropologists is not negligible. We present here the preliminary results of a joint research among the University of Pisa, the Visualisation Laboratory of CINECA and the CNR-ITABC (Institute of Technologies Applied to Cultural Heritage, National Research Council, Rome) whose aim is reconstructing, through Spiral Computed Tomography data and virtual modelling techniques (in our case with VTK software), 3-D models of the possible physiognomy of ancient egyptian mummies. This work is carried out through a multidisciplinary approach, involving different competences: image processing, anthropology, egyptology, computing archaeology. The project, developed by CINECA, in collaboration with Villa Giulia National Etruscan Museum and the Genus Bononiae History Museum in Bologna, aims to develop methodologies with an interdisciplinary applicative-creative perspective for sharing Etruscan heritage and promoting increased participation in culture and the humanities.

In this context, the video "Il piccolo Masaccio e le Terre Nuove" has the purpose of bringing children and young people, in particular, closer to the museum main themes. The video presents a series of very different techniques, such as live shots, taken also by drone, Computer Graphics, 2D drawings executed with a tablet, drawings sketched with traditional techniques, such as India ink and watercolours, and digital videos taken from Google Earth.

En la difícil tarea de captar la atención de los visitantes y grabar la experiencia en su memoria... more En la difícil tarea de captar la atención de los visitantes y grabar la experiencia en su memoria, museos y lugares de interés cultural recurren cada vez más a las aplicaciones informáticas. Pero ¿son todas ellas válidas y ejecutables? VisitLab Cineca (Visual Laboratory Information Technology) está llevando a cabo tres proyectos, cada uno de ellos basado en una aplicación diferente: de la película realizada por medio de computación gráfica hasta la instalación evocadora, o desde la aplicación de realidad aumentada hasta las simulaciones de dinámicas sociales y acontecimientos históricos. Solo el tiempo dirá si estas soluciones son las más válidas para afrontar y superar el reto.

The application of Information & Communication Technologies (or, more specifically, Virtual Reali... more The application of Information & Communication Technologies (or, more specifically, Virtual Reality) to Cultural Heritage can quite certainly be deemed as one of the new frontiers of cultural policies. 2 And, possibly, the most engaging and captivating of them all, thanks to the incredibly broad scope of the proposed computerization and the potential coverage provided by technological tools for the production and reproduction of 3D images. Such tools also allow to visualize the transformations of 3D images over time and to project them in an immersive environment thanks to a more extended use of interactive modes, and also make it possible to " customize " Net surfing thanks to the recent diffusion of palmtops. The present paper is our contribution to the topic and we will try and demonstrate how extraordinarily fruitful the idea is to use visualization as interactive access and interface to cultural databases. ICT versus Cultural Heritage The visualization of computation emerged in a scientific and technological environment. However, as visualization technologies are quite versatile, nowadays they are widely used and virtual systems can also be employed to generate, surf and explore historical-cultural reconstructed environments. In the archeological field such a mode is over a decade old. 3 The employment of such new technologies will allow to visualize and illustrate " reconstructions " of environments of the past, including buildings, landscapes and artifacts. 4 It must also be said that, to improve conservation and management, the computerized recording of the wealth of documents kept in cultural institutions is getting quite widespread, thus providing – and in a sense calling for – a more " communication-oriented " use of such a cultural patrimony.

The platform, with its dynamic processing pipeline and automatic video analysis tools, enables the enrichment of the moving images metadata in an innovative way, improving the " search and discovery " capabilities made available to researchers and citizens.
