So I take it you don’t like Disney’s The Little Mermaid”, but you prefer its sequel “The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea”? That is correct?

Haha no quite the opposite! I do like “The Little Mermaid”, but still recognize how it could be better –

  1. Ariel could have a bigger arc
  2. Triton’s deal against humans could’ve been explored more (not in the 3rd movie as a last-minute afterthought)
  3. Ariel could be more directly involved in defeating Ursula (like she did in the Broadway version)

I hope said points of improvement could be made in the “Little Mermaid” remake :)

“The Little Mermaid II” is far worse in comparison…

  1. The animation’s worse
  2. The songs suck, “For a Moment” is the only good song IMO
  3. The old characters act completely out of character (like Ariel and Triton) or lack personality (like Eric)
  4. The new characters are straight up rip-offs of other Disney characters (”*GASP* Ursula’s crazy sister!”)
  5. The plot holes are too big to ignore.  Why did Melody’s family build a giant wall to keep her away from the sea, when they could’ve just moved a little further inland? Why didn’t they tell Melody the real reason the ocean was too dangerous for her? Or at least make up a convincing lie (like tell Melody there’s lots pirates looking to hold her for ransom, or something)?

“The Little Mermaid II” is one of those films I loved as a kid, but looking back I (and several others) see so many flaws with it

TLDR; love Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, love its sequel ironically XD

The 2023 remake actually made all my suggested improvements 😀

There’s an awful lot of King Triton apologia. I’m specifically talking about the 1989 Triton. I’m talking fans who think he did nothing wrong before destroying Ariel’s grotto in a fit of rage. These fans are real quick to forgive all the previous times he yelled at Ariel and made her cry. Without ever trying to reconcile her until it’s too late. And Triton making Ariel cry is a repeated motif throughout the 1992 spinoff series. Fans’ explanation will be that he’s just a typical parent. Even when Triton himself realizes he was wrong to do that.

Was Ariel’s obvious fear anytime he got mad not an obvious red flag for child abuse to the fans?

Sometimes I think it’s just adult fans trying to be mature/edgy by saying they now like a character people hate. Other times it’s fans trying to justify their own awful childhoods, being raised by parents just like Triton.

This is going to sound silly, but I think a part of it is people are a little attracted to him.

HEAR ME OUT ON THIS! I’m speaking from experience in multiple fandoms, because it happens all the time.

First case in point:

The same thing happened with Professor Membrane in the Invader Zim fandom. Professor Membrane is a HORRIBLE father. He torments his own son by regularly calling him insane, refusing to be supportive unless Dib does something Membrane likes, allowed his son to be drug into an asylum despite knowing the cause of Dib’s symptoms in that episode, and was almost completely absent from his children’s lives, depending on machines to raise them. The only people trying to paint him as a good Dad are people who find him attractive.

Now let’s look at Triton who, despite his age is way more conventionally attractive, swims around topless, and is a fictional creature that is frequently depicted as desireable

(Yes, the bottom right one is official Disney art, Triton’s Kingdom by Jared Franco, and it’s expensive)

A lot of people view Triton as a DILF. A lot of them are the same people saying he wasn’t that bad.

People in fandoms have a history of defending characters who were obviously in the wrong if they also happen to be attractive to them.

Common examples include Loki before he was redeemed, Killmonger, Sephiroth, Mother Gothel as portrayed in Tangled (the amount of people I see who actually argue she truly loved Rapunzel is horrifying), Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy, Ursula, reboot Catra who continues to abuse She-Ra even after her supposed redemption, Lusamine (by the Pokemon Company themselves no less!), etc.

It’s more obvious with villains, but it definitely applies to King Triton, too.

I think part of it is no one wants to admit they find someone who’s clearly not a great person attractive. They’re fictional characters, not real life criminals. Be all right with saying, “Yeah, this character isn’t a good person, but I still think they’re hot” and move on instead of trying to defend everything they did. Or if you wanna go the extra mile, write them a little redemption arc that fully acknowledges they did crappy things.

@masterhallmark What’s even more frustrating about Triton is that he does acknowledge doing crappy things…but only to his yes-man Sebastian. Or to himself. Never to his own daughter whom he’s actually crappy to.

Very suspicious that Nolan is filming “The Odyssey” in the Mediterranean (Morocco, Turkey, Italy) yet casts no Mediterranean actors whatsoever. Not even famous American actors of Mediterranean descent (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Anniston, Al Pacino, Jon Stamos, etc.)

I’ll be very disappointed if this is yet another movie shot and set in Greece where the only Greek talent are extras.

I have thoughts on the Disney dads

The Queen of the Night telling Pamina "I think we're gonna have to kill This guy, Pamina" while Pamina says "Damn".ALT

“I think we’re gonna have to kill this guy, Pamina.”

“Damn.”

Jumping on this meme with the Die Zauberflöte characters. Enjoy! Art by me.

@masterhallmark Totally agree. Also noticed a lot of this with ASOIAF. Bad parents whom fans forgive and just happen to find attractive (Tywin, Cersei, Alicent, Otto, etc.).

IIRC “As Long As You’re Mine” takes place in the forest. Or a corn field. Maybe the movie can strategically place bushes and corn to give Elphie and Fiyero some modesty 🌳🌽

The war is back again and worse, today I did not find any food to put on my family’s table in Ramadan iftar, knowing that I am the breadwinner for my family after my father retired from work two years ago, the horrific scenes that we see daily in Gaza move stones, but they still do not move large groups of people, damn every person who failed, you left us to face death in all its forms …
