It was founded by the legendary Sundiata Keita around 1235 CE, following the Battle of Kirina, which freed Mali from the rule of the Sosso Kingdom. Sundiata established a prosperous empire that extended over present-day Mali, Senegal, Guinea, and parts of Mauritania, becoming a vital hub for trade, culture, and Islamic scholarship.

The empire reached its zenith under Mansa Musa (r. 1312–1337), often regarded as one of the wealthiest individuals in history.
