The title of the show, “Brian Griffin: Capitalist Realism” is a reference to the portraiture Griffin did primarily during the Thatcher years, a nod to the Socialist Realism art movement that glorified Communist values. Griffin was inspired by the German and Russian painters from that era and created his own version of the paintings while making photographs of business leaders, politicians, and personalities. Although he’s unsure who came up with the term Capitalist Realism, Griffin likes it. It’s a day that has became known as Black Monday and for good reason. A quarter century ago – on Oct. 19, 1987 – the U.S. stock market suffered its biggest one-day drop in history. The Dow Jones industrial average swooned 508 points, or 22.6 per cent, leaving investors stunned and shaken, while triggering a worldwide rout in equity prices. Quint Buchholz was born in Stolberg near Aachen and grew up in Stuttgart. He studied history of art for four terms, followed by painting and graphic design at the Munich Academy of Art under Prof. Gerd Winner. He has worked as a painter and illustrator since 1979, illustrating over fourty books for German and international publishers. From 1982 onwards his works have also been exhibited in over seventy solo exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Taiwan.
