Pruning in spring stimulates new growth and protects the plants from extreme temperatures in the winter if you prune them in the fall, though they tend to be very hardy. They’re also nice to look at over the winter and they can provide some habitat for birds.   If you need to prune them this fall because they will be in the way over the winter or you are worried about snow or ice damaging or breaking branches, try to make sure it’s late in the fall when temperatures are consistently under 32 degrees fahrenheit (0 celsius).   You can maintain these as large shrubs or even multi-trunk trees.
