Salvatore Maranzano took over the future Bonanno Family in 1930, after Giuseppe “Joe the Boss” Masseria, leader of the rival Morello Family, forced Cola Schirò to step down. A major gang war soon errupted – the Castellammarese War – as the criminal factions allied with Masseria fought those allied with Maranzano for control of New York.

#OnThisDay 1897. Don Vito Genovese was born. He rose to power in America during the Castellammarese War and was instrumental in the murder of Salvatore Maranzano alongside Lucky Luciano. He later became leader of that crime family and it was renamed after him as the Genovese Family. Genovese served as mentor to the future boss of the Genovese crime family Vincent "Chin" Gigante. He was known as Boss of all Bosses from 1957 to 1959.
