Originally discovered by Vita Sackville-West’s son, Nigel Nicolson, the confession was written by Vita about her former lover Violet Trefusis and would later form the basis for Nigel’s book ‘Portrait of a Marriage’.

Usually tucked away in the Writing Room, this Gladstone Bag forms part of ‘Radical Relationships’, an exploration of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson’s ties to an influential network of literary figures celebrating LGBTQ+ heritage.

Discover more about this story in ‘Radical Relationships’, displaying at Sissinghurst until March 2025.
