Makes a lot of sense. I was clearly the scape goat that could do no wrong when his copdependant friend (who would kill his his own family for him) was his golden bully child. I used to think his best friend was one of the nicest people I knew but he turned out to be the worst. In a family system, roles like scapegoat, fixer, caretaker, and the helpless one are common. The scapegoat bears blame, the fixer resolves conflicts, the caretaker provides emotional support, and the helpless one often receives extra attention. It is convenient for a family to have a scapegoat, as the other members don’t have to take as much personal responsibility. You might find that when you challenge other members of the family, they tell you their behaviour is totally acceptable (when it is not) and that your behaviour is not okay. This is likely to happen when you try to put a boundary in place. They don’t like it, so they push back, commenting again on your ‘over sensitivity’.
