The brown thrasher, Virginia state bird,  gets its name from its brown color and its habit of thrashing in leaf litter with its long, curved bill as it searches for insects. The bird has a long, graceful tail, and is bright reddish brown above, with white or pale buff, heavily streaked underparts and 2 white wing bars. Adult birds have yellow eyes.
