Purple loosestrife is a wetland perennial native to Europe and Asia that is an invasive problem in North American aquatic habitats. This plant was primarily spread across the continent as an ornamental. Today it can be found across the entire northern half of the United States. Spectacular when in full bloom, Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is a vigorous, upright perennial enjoying an extremely long bloom season from late spring to late summer. It features pink, purple, or magenta flowers in dense spikes, up to 18 in. long (45 cm) held atop lance-shaped leaves.

Lythrum salicaria is a PERENNIAL growing to 1 m (3ft 3in) by 0.5 m (1ft 8in) at a fast rate. See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 3. It is in flower from June to August, and the seeds ripen from August to September. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Bees, flies.
