Benvenuto
--Luigi Chiesa (talk) 21:45, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:44, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Tymoshenko2010.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Pay attention to licensing
|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:Split Vestibula 1866-1898.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

--Emanuele676 (talk) 19:13, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Historical images of Malta by Calvert Richard Jones
editWell done on uploading many old photos of Malta taken by Calvert Richard Jones (Category:Historical images of Malta by Calvert Richard Jones). These are some of the oldest photographs ever taken on Malta, so they are of great historical value since they document scenes on the island which no longer exist. One of the most intriguing ones for me was this photo of the old church of Birkirkara, taken a decade before its dome collapsed. That photo might well be the only one in existence which documents the church still largely intact (although the photo describes it as a ruin, and probably part of the roof had already collapsed when the photo was taken). You also uploaded the best photo on Commons so far of w:Ponsonby's Column, which was destroyed by lightning less than 20 years after the photo was taken.
At least two of the photos uploaded have been flipped horizontally (I am including more recent photos for comparison):
- View of Senglea and the dockyard
- Corner of Auberge d'Aragon and present-day Triq il-Punent (the church is that of Our Lady of Pilar)
I had a quick look through the others, and the rest seem to be OK at first glance. Once again, thanks a lot for the uploads - when I have time I'll try to add more categories to the images and try to use more of them in Wikipedia articles as well. Xwejnusgozo (talk) 13:41, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot @Xwejnusgozo: . There are many other pics from Calvert Jones out there, but these are at least a start. His job on Malta in 1846-47 is indeed remarkable. Glad to hear about Ponsonby's Column too. I've flipped the two pics, thanks for notifying me. Best, --Dans (talk) 11:46, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Dans: Thanks for flipping the two pics. I had known that Calvert Jones took some photos in Malta in the 1840s, but I had no idea that there were so many. I recall seeing an album on some image hosting website (possibly Flickr?) which contained hundreds of old Malta photos including a few which were probably by Calvert Jones - but I can't seem to find it now. I haven't had time to check all the categories of these yet, but I'll try to have a look through all of them shortly. Xwejnusgozo (talk) 22:28, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:1st Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment), Valletta.jpg
editThis file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:1st Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment), Valletta.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. Thanks for uploading File:Giovanni Carnovali.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Adolf Hitler square
editH. This square is in Tuzla, not Sarajevo. I have renamed it. If you are interested, here is how this building looks today in Tuzla. --Smooth O (talk) 08:42, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, hvala @Smooth O: for the correction! And nice to see the pic of today too. I'm trying to work on some old pics from BiH, thankfully PD-Yugoslavia applies to a lot of them. --Dans (talk) 09:51, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
We need your feedback!
editHello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2022! Please help with this survey
editDear Dans,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 150K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 35 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2022.
Kind regards, Wiki Loves Monuments team, 09:41, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Guardian Poles UK 2016.jpg
editThis file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Guardian Poles UK 2016.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".
You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Guardian Poles UK 2016.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.
