Kristbaum (talk) 12:08, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

In relation to 3D objects, and constructables in general...

edit

Hi, I like the 3D support, but I had a related idea I wanted to run by you.

In extending efforts to add 3D content, would it be possible to provide a way for lower-poly 3D to be 'unfolded'?

Before the Internet, I made up a LOT of paper and card based models, which were more widely available for things such as buildings, ships and artefacts than I am finding currently.

I'd very much like to see "constructables" added to Wikimedia hosted resources, based on uploaded STL files where possible.

From a technical standpoint the creation of a printable 'paper model' isn't that different from doing a specfic kind of UV unwrap, and if it is proposed to allow 3D objects to have 'textures' the texture maps could also form part of or the basis of a paper model.

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:33, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Also, although not strictly 3D related, I'd also like to an effort made to determine if there are various forms of "constructable" resources supporting educational use that should be encouraged, or the creation undertaken in specfic workshops. The aim of these constructable resources would be to move resource use beyond a computer terminal or mobile phone, and for visual aid use :).

My list of examples (not exhaustive) was:-

  • Printable Globes, based on available mapping. (This is not just Terrestrial ones, for example I was looking for a constructable star globe the other day, and was not finding them, and given the availablity of sutiable imaging, non-terrestrial worlds could also be mapped.)

  • paper models of out of copyright or ancient buildings. ( In the 1980's paper models of prominent architecuture was not uncommon, and I can recall making up a lot of them :) )
  • Map and counter/figure "constructables" of historical tactical or strategic situations. This has overlaps with "tabletop-gaming"
  • Paper villages or environments of various eras or situations. ( Some more specifc examples would be a "Main Street" model, for use in road safety education, a "model" farm,
  • Toy Theatres. - Are there out of copyright comedies, or light drama hosted on Wikisoruce that suitable scenery and wardrobe could be drawn for?
    • I'm also wondering if there is scope for their to be a 'constructable' set design tool for student and amateur productions.
  • Paper dolls. The thinkign here would be to have constructable 'paper dolls' . In my experience in the 1980's a number of heratige sites in England sold paper dolls of medieval knights , 18th century ladies fashion, 1940's outfits amongst others.
  • Dolls clothing - The aim here would be to support 'fashion' and 'costume' related resources. "Pioneer Barbie" is probably already a thing but there are countless eras that could be considered. The resources to be created would essentially be constructable patterns. It would also with something like this be possible to use scaled versions of old pattern books, to create 3D representations of fashions and costume seen in old illustrations.

I'd be very interested in seeing some kind of Wikimedia "constructables" or "maker-space" Workshop happening at some future date ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:33, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

That's a very interesting suggestion! Do you know of any software that is available already that could do such a thing? Convert a STL to a flat representation? I think your idea with using the textures could work as well, but that probably differs a lot between different textured file formats.
I found this page which actually converts to paper representation, maybe this is similar to your idea? Kristbaum (talk) 09:58, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't have specific "free software" examples. UV unwrapping/unseaming is something that can be done manually in blender I think.
There maybe plugins for other CAD tools.
The link you gave is indeed an unfolder, but it needs registration :( ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:13, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Some more examples of constructables:-
  • Packaging design: - Simple and slightly more complex packaging 'nets'.
  • Sheet metal designs - These are sometimes prototyped in card/paper first.
  • Dolls houses - I've seen paper model ones, but also more detailed plans for timber constructed ones. If such plans were created as free resources it would be to support architecture, construction articles. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:22, 18 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys

edit

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform).

  1. A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
  2. A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!

Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 18:24, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Alachuckthebuck Is there a way to turn all of the SDRs into normal DRs at once, or could you maybe withdraw them? Kristbaum (talk) 16:32, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Or is there a way to restore them, now that they are gone..... Kristbaum (talk) 16:34, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, For each file, you must give the source of the image, and some information about the software license. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:38, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Unfortuneatly, @Yann Already deleted them, so your best option is to request undeletion. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 16:40, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
In the time it took me to write that, Yann already fixed it. Sorry for the confusion. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 16:41, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Yann for the reminder and restoration, and no harm done @Alachuckthebuck.. I could have linked it on the file page instead of the category..
Feel free to test the web or android version, there is a new Commons game on there :) The iOS is still in review.. Maybe you have some helpful feedback, it still has some very rough edges.. Kristbaum (talk) 16:52, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't know how I feel about these being directly added to commons without review. The app should definitely include the author field from commons, and a relevant Wikipedia article if one exists. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 16:59, 16 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Request to Partner on Glam project

edit

Hey, good day I got a link from a member of the GLAM telegram group that led me to participants of train the trainers program held in 2023/2024 and he asked me to reach out to any one of you to partner with me on a GLAM project I want to work on.

The project is to curate and digitize heritage archives, but I'll need to partner with you on training members how to use open refine for batch uploads and we will use the archive for practical sessions.

I am about to put in a proposal please kindly confirm if you will be available to train a few members thank you, its a 4 months timeline so we can plan according to your schedules in the confines of the four months thank you. Lutarchitecture (talk) 09:30, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sure, sounds interesting!
I would love to hear more details, but in general I'm in. Kristbaum (talk) 13:59, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great this is good, so generally I work with heritage archives in Nigeria and I use pattypan for batch uploads, I had a challenge and I needed to edit some uploads make corrections and I couldn't but I was made to understand you could make batch edits on common using open refine so I am like why not a great opportunity to learn a new tool on Commons, so generally I want to use the opportunity to train Nigerian Wikimedia Community members on the use of PattyPan, Open Refine, Wikidata and Meta wiki generally. Those are the four high points of the projects
The early phases of the projects will be virtual and the last stage which will be uploading Wil be physical for us here in Nigeria while connected to you on a virtual platform as we round up.
The archives we have up to a thousand files to digitize and our these 1000 files i can get copyright consent for over 500 files. I'll share the jpegs with you through a cloud I do not know if wikimedia has a cloud file sharing system that would be better and easier for me. And distribute different projects to different participants, I am looking at 20 - 30 participants generally we could mix the participants with people from your Usergroup as well to foster cross border collaborations and partnerships.
I will start drafting a proposal for the project and I'll share the link with you so you can make additions too, you can create a dashboard for the trainings too, and share with me a suitable timeline starting 2nd February 2025. I am delighted to carry out this project with you. Lutarchitecture (talk) 14:29, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Cool, if you need to send me a private link you can use the Wikipedia E-Mail feature! See you then! Kristbaum (talk) 19:30, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
