A card pattern is a recognised and established standard design of playing card. Many are out of copyright (or never had any copyright) and have therefore been produced by multiple cardmakers or manufacturers. The best known in the English-speaking world is the English pattern which, however, is descended from the French Rouen pattern and uses French suit symbols.
