British English: A Royal Air Force aerodrome consists of any site where the Royal Air Force (RAF) operate their military aircraft from, currently or formerly. These may include:
  1. basic grass airfields (marked and unmarked aircraft landing surfaces), e.g. RAF Upavon;
  2. temporary facilities constructed with runways made from systems such as pierced steel planking (PSP), e.g. RAF Stanley;
  3. rudimentary paved and sealed airports with permanent concrete and / or bitumen-asphalt runways and taxiways but little or no other infrastructure, e.g. RAF Barkston Heath;
  4. through to major airbases being totally self-sufficient with complete infrastructure facilities required for conducting all aspects of Royal Air Force operations (including secure weapons storage areas to support high-intensity combat) and complex aviation navigation and communications systems to match major civilian international airports, e.g. RAF Brize Norton.

These sites may be classed as a full 'Royal Air Force station' (as defined by approval of the monarch of the United Kingdom and the granting of a station badge), or Royal Air Force sites without official 'station' in their name (typically satellite airfield facilities which are parented by another RAF station), to advanced landing grounds known simply by a letter and numbers.

It is important to note that not all full Royal Air Force stations included an aerodrome; these were typically locations for administrative headquarters, training establishments, bombing ranges, or radar sites, such as RAF Bentley Priory, RAF Locking, RAF Donna Nook, or RAF Neatishead.
