Merkið ("the sign") is the flag of the Faroe Islands. It was designed 1919 by Jens Oliver Lisberg and two of his comrades, hoisted the first time in Fámjin that year, and on 25 april 1940 recognized by Winston Churchill during World War II. Day of the Flag is each year 25 april.
