Please use Latin family name for plants categorization instead generic Category:Plants. See Linnaea borealis for example. --EugeneZelenko 03:26, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm not biologist too :-). If plant article contains something after word family (I assume somebody with biology background wrote this) use it as name for category. Again see Linnaea borealis as example. --EugeneZelenko 14:56, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi, you added "redundant" template on my picture. It's not redundant, the SVG can't handle the font properly hence the PNG version. The SVG is just provided as a second picture if someone wants to modify it, but for display purpose, the SVG engine is still missing important features. Dake 15:39, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

British English pronunciation

[edit]

Hi. Firstly, thanks for giving me my first commons talk message: it was lovely to see the orange bar. Secondly, well, I don't think I can bring myself to go through that whole category and sort it. I'll certainly do so from now on with new pronunciations, but the old ones, it seems like a lot of hard work for little gain.

As to my contribution to the Polish Wikibooks, no problem whatsoever. I was at a loose end, wondering what to do, so I found that Wikibook (don't ask me how - it's a long story). Anyway, I rambling. Sorry and thanks, —Celestianpower háblame 10:58, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, all images with my template (User:Celestianpower/audio) have been changed. Since it was only implemented recently, most are still as they were. Sorry. —Celestianpower háblame 11:13, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have removed the delete notice on this image because it is not a film screenshot. If you had completed the deletion request I would have simply commented on it... but since you did not, I simply removed the delete tag. Please see the uploaders other uploads and his talk page. Also, the uploader's claims are consistent with his commentary on the Sweedish wikipedia. If you still have concerns, feel free to let me know... or bring them up on the village pump... but at this point I do not see a need to put deletion notices on single images. In any case, thanks for checking uploads! --Gmaxwell 00:02, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing of this photo says you are the author and licence this photo under GFDL and Creative Commons licenses. Flickr page says author of this photo is borealis63 and it has all rights reserved. How can you explain this? --Derbeth talk 08:22, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I sought and obtained the permission of Borealis63 to use photos of Taputapuātea marae. Here is the email (Flickr mail, I use the same account name Kahuroa there.

Flickr Email from Borealis63 to Kahuroa, 17 Sep '06, 9.40pm PDT: From: borealis63 Subject: Re: Little Man at Taputapuatea Dear Kahuroa,

My husband, Matthew, actually took this photo but I'm sure he wouldn't mind. New Zealand is close to his heart. Ever since he had the pleasure of visiting your country during the 2000 Olympics and had an amazing time. He hopes to revisit with me, of course!

I've been intrigued by the Polynesian culture, especially how it relates to my own Filipino culture. I felt quite at home in Tahiti. Actually within a couple of days, locals were speaking to me in French or Tahitian. It helped that my tall stature is closer to the Tahitian people than the petite Filipinas.

BTW, I'm going to post a couple more photos from the same marae grounds, which you may use as well, if interested.

Sincerely, Borealis (aka Aurora)

I selected licence type CC2.0 - that is where the self bit came from. What should I have used - I told Borealis I could use a CC licence, but the reply above doesn't actually require that. Kahuroa 04:47, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message Derbeth. The impression I got was that the copyright holder was happy to release these specific images relating to Taputapuātea marae. However, I can contact them again thru Flickr. If you'd like me to do that, what particular things should I spell out so no doubt remains? Kahuroa 07:21, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be better to ask the author one more time about agreement to terms of [3] (in my opinion better than just free use) for images: Image:TaputapuateaMarae03.jpg and Image:TaputapuateaMarae04.jpg. --Derbeth talk 07:35, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How about Cc-by-sa-2.5 instead? I'd feel better about asking them about that, and I have changed the files accordingly (you can revert if you like) to simplify the process of asking them. How's that?

Kahuroa 08:34, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My images from Flickr

[edit]

HI. Clindberg has pointed out the 'no-commercial' requirement on some of the Flickr photos that I uploaded. This was a genuine error on my part because of my ignorance of the intricacies of the cc licences. I have gone thru my recent uploads and flagged the offending ones for copyvio. I just don't have the time to chase up the copyright holders for permissions for these particular images. I am however, doing my best to improve the email permission status of the Taputapuātea images and a couple of others relating to Mt Te Aroha and Waiorongomai that I got permission for from the copyrightholder. Thanks again for your vigilance. Kahuroa 00:37, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. I will take into account your advice in the future. --Crisneda2000 14:25, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My German Audiofile: your corrections

[edit]

Hi Derbeth,

thanx a lot for eding my files. It was my first try and I failed completely (wrong filenames, wrong description and I even ruined the layout of a wiktionary-Site) :(

Reading your correction was a short and helpful tutorial! Now my personal template for audio-descriptions is edited. I hope it will save you the work in the future. :)

I actually worked as Webadmin before and I wonder what kind of language is used at Wikipedia / Wiktionary in general. It's not really html, is it? In case you know an explaination site, pleased drop a line at my discussion site.

In addition I wonder how to delete the De-gemocht.ogg, because you are completely right, De-gemocht2.ogg is actually the correct file, but I couldn't find out how to delete No. 1 and rename No. 2. So in case you know where to find to do list for deletion or are an Admin yourself, please delete De-gemocht.ogg because it is crap and rename De-gemocht2.ogg to De-gemocht.ogg.

I'd like to ask you another favour: the Polish version of the German "I love You" Site (http://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/ich_liebe_dich) - then under Polnisch: [1] kocham cię (pl), ja ciebie kocham (pl) doesn't exist yet, just for the sake of having it online by february, 14 th and in audio-files, can you help? Pleeeeease :)? Might add to World Pease finally, you know... ;)

Thanx again, Leni Berlin

PS: I really liked your photos. Good stuff. :)

Transformer Nomination

[edit]

Hi, Derberth, greetings to Poland from Zagreb, Croatia!

Tank you for your kind remark that the image is not bad. True, I am not a graphic artist. I hope I can count on your willingness to help me make it better with your advice. The project is GNU GFDL, and free. I hope it could improve science class, even for poor countries and the unprivileged.

The image is auto-generated, from a CGI rendering engine (please spare time to try it):

http://magrf.grf.hr/~mtodorov/xformer/transformer-1.64.html

I have taken your comment as a challenge to improve. I hope to have your support here in general interest. I do not strive so much to become a Featured image artist, as to improve my work and help the kids to learn transformers.

Thank you very much in advice for all effort on this behalf.

Mirsad Zagreb, Croatia

Hello. The script is very impressive and I appreciate how much work it needed. I added my vote for "oppose" because I found other pictures better candidates to Featured Picture. I can't say what's wrong with your scheme - it does its job well, I'm not an expert on physics and electricity to advise you what to improve. The difference between an "interesting" and "ordinary" image is hard to define and rather a subjetive thing. My personal feeling is that other pictures should to be displayed on main page - that's it. But apart from Featured Pictures, most of images on Commons are just "ordinary" - so it's nothing wrong with an image being not stunning; images on Commons serve educational purposes. --Derbeth talk 19:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I was hoping for some suggestions. Thank you for the commendation on script. I realize there is much more work to be done to become a "Featured" render artist. Thank you.

Regards, -- Mtodorov 69 09:50, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

wymowa

[edit]

Pozdrawiam // tsca [re] 20:20, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

// tsca [re] 22:58, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

dziękuję bardzo.

OK, I think I got it this time. I've added bad name to the old files. Thanks again. --F.G. comm 23:50, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, me again. :-) I need to record the Croatian word "luk" but the problem is the word depending on on the accent has different meaning. So I have to record two versions but they are written the same. Should I just add "2" at the end of the file? I stwarzać pokusy.

Selso (talk) 20:22, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

How does your bot work

[edit]

Hi Derbeth,

How does your bot work in relation to adding audio pronunciations to en.wiktionary entries? Do you have some screenshots or written description?

Hi, I'm active on Wikidata working on lexemes. It should have been named "Sv-en_and.ogg" instead. Could you fix that on all the imported ogg's? Thanks in advance.--So9q (talk) 13:08, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong pronunciation in File:Fr-adapteur.ogg

frwikt shows the right one is [a.dap.tœʁ]. This seems not a work by wikimedian, not sure how to deal with it. EdwardAlexanderCrowley (talk) 03:50, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The prononciation is correct (from northen france, most probably urban), but the naming is incorrect. The only thing (apart from being misnamed) is that the saying is « un adaptateur » (an adaptator) instead of just « adaptateur » or « adapteur » (which is rarer) - but I would'nt delete it for that. Just changing the name will be enough. Michelet-密是力 (talk) 08:29, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Does it really need renaming? 'un' is an article. There is no need for separate recordings of 'un adapteur' and of 'adapteur'. Hence I don't see a need for 'freeing' the name of Fr-adapteur. --Derbeth talk 16:36, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hinzufügen von Hörbeispielen

[edit]

Hallo Derbeth,

Viele Grüße --Mighty Wire (talk) 00:53, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo! Fix description

[edit]

Hello, can you please explain why edits like this one are an improvement? I'm not sure about that. Has it been discussed somewhere? Thank you. Poco a poco (talk) 16:18, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Poco a poco, thanks for asking. Open File:Bodegas de Mileștii Mici, Moldavia, 2023-11-02, DD 74.jpg and you will see for yourself. Click 'Open in Media Viewer' and you won't see the correct description ('Wine cellars of Mileștii Mici, Chișinău, Moldova'). Because of the template inserted where it does not belong, what will be visible will be just 'This file illustrates a cultural heritage monument in Moldova, ID', which is not just not much useful, it's also broken (ID that is visible when seeing full page is omitted). This problem appears not just in 'Media Viewer'. Wrong description is used in pages like Commons:Picture of the Year/2023/Gallery. Probably also in other pages like galleries in Wikipedia. I'm not sure what would be the best way to discuss this, so your suggestions are welcome. For now I'm focusing on making those photos displayed correctly, without waiting weeks for a discussion to come to some conclusion. --Derbeth talk 16:25, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Derbeth, thanks for explaining the changes you also made to the file pages of my photos. Unfortunately, you also moved the Photo credit box template to the bottom. This makes the page look messy and untidy. I find this unsatisfactory. As for the cultural heritage templates, it would be better if they were placed in the Summary field so that reusers could see this information immediately. If this is a problem for Media Viewer users, I think it should be discussed on the appropriate page and changed by the programmers if necessary. Thanks also to Poco a poco for your message, which can be an impulse to change something in the Media Viewer. This seems more efficient than changing thousands of file pages. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 17:41, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Radomianin. I moved the credit box on the purpose. I don't see anything useful in this box for a viewer of the picture. It's contains information useful for a person wanting to reuse the picture, but there is a section meant for this purpose ('Licensing'). What looks messy to me is giving licensing information twice, and in different parts of the page. Things that are closely related should be in close visual distance on the page, so I edited with this purpose in mind. --Derbeth talk 17:58, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Derbeth, thank you for your explanation. You are certainly right in terms of pure logic. But from experience, the License field is often overlooked because reusers don't scroll down. So custom info templates are right and important. There are many users who proceed in a similar way, as you can see in this picture for example. I would really recommend discussing this problem on the appropriate forum so that changes can be made to the Media Viewer. I think that at least three users like XRay, Poco a poco and myself should be enough to go the long way instead of the work intensive way of many file page changes. Ok, I started the discussion in Commons:Village_pump/Technical#Templates_in_description_field_cause_empty_caption_in_Media_Viewer so that the visibility of the problem is broader. Note that discussions take a long time (I bet someone will say the buggy functioning of the Media Viewer is correct and what I expect is wrong), it also takes a long time to find someone with both technical knowledge and free time to do the coding work, the work is not easy as it affects how wikipedia.org works, and finally since Media Viewer operates in multiple MediaWiki instances (Commons, Wikipedia, maybe Wikibooks and others as well) it may be hard to push those changes through everywhere. Due to those factors, I don't expect the situation to improve in any way before Christmas or so, so I prefer to edit and see the results now, when I'm voting for POTY. But let's hope I'm wrong and it gets fixed soon. --Derbeth talk 18:21, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, Derbeth. The long road is certainly rockier, but if in the end the problem can be solved by technical means, then in my opinion this is the more effective way. Thanks for your patience and best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 18:38, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO the monument ID does belong to the description and if the Media Viewer doesn't doesn't come along with it the solution for the issue is not moving the box (it would apply to approx. 10,000 of my pictures on Commons) but fixing the Media Viewer. I'm not sure either how often the Media Viewer is in fact used. That would be an interesting information. Anyhow and apart from this topic, Derbeth, it is always healthy to kick off a discussion and gain some kind of consensus before starting massive edits with arguments like "I don't see it useful". Thank you for the new thread in the Village Pump. My impression overall is that it feels like using a sledgehamer for cracking a nut. Poco a poco (talk) 21:21, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I must thank Poco a poco and Radomianin for their statements and want to second them. – Aristeas (talk) 08:49, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
