A "how-to" for files categorization
[edit]Hi and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Thanks for the pictures you uploaded, most of them really considerable. But, just to avoid technical problems of file categorization, I left to you a brief technical "how-to".
- When you categorize a file, it is not needed (and discouraged) to use an over-categorization "descending" and general categories (Cuba, Havana, Castles, Towers, Buildings etc...). The deepest category is sufficient. For example the categories for the Gran Teatro de La Habana, Castillo de la Real Fuerza de La Habana or Catedral de La Habana, El Capitolio de La Habana exist. Of course, a file could have more categories than one, if focusized on different subjects. For example a picture clearly focusized on a woman near/on a car (for example a Ford) in Plaza de la Revolución in 2012, could be categorized in that way: 2012 in Havana, Ford classic cars in Havana, Plaza de la Revolución (Havana), and Women of Havana. It's just an example. Another example could be about this file uploaded by you that I've correctly categorized it as Chevrolet classic cars in Havana and License plates of Cuba.
- Well... What is over-categorization? As explained at COM:OVERCAT, it is when a file, category or other page is placed in several levels of the same branch in the category tree.
- Do not use synonyms and/or words in different languages to categorize a file, as for example churches/chiese/iglesias, Havana/Habana/L'Avana, Castles/Chateaux etc... Even if the Category:Habana exists it is a category redirect to the Category:Havana and must be empty. A category as the Category:Iglesias is a disambiguation category and, also, must be empty.
- The language used for categories is generally English, also for cities or countries (as Havana, Moscow, Germany, Spain etc) with their English name. Suddenly only categories about some structures have their own name in their language (ex.: "El Capitolio").
- This is just a suggestion: as for COM:RENAME, a more descriptive name for a picture is preferable.
Well, that's all for the "how-to". Thanks again for the pictures and for their quality. Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 00:37, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Any closeups on the little sedan that I placed a note on in this picture? Would love to see more of the Dodge 1500 (and to find out if I id'd it correctly). Cheers, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 05:06, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]Hi Gorupdebesanez, Dэя-Бøяg already teached you how to categorize. Please respect the rules of Commons and do what you have been teached! -- Ies (talk) 16:25, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- Ok. I've seen and fixed the categorization... Well: thanks for the pictures, most of them are really remarkable, and IMHO some of them could be candidated as featured pictures. I've seen that you have tried to fix the categorization, after the notice of Ies. Ok, but:
- 1- Even if "Cuba" and "Havana" exist as categories, it's redundat to categorize the files in that way: (see COM:OVERCAT). And also... due to the fact that national categories as "Cuba" are well structured in thousands of subcategories, there is practically no need to categorize any file directly into the Category:Cuba.
- 2- Choose the deepest existant categories: the main Category:Havana is well structured: for example the categories Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, El Malecón, Houses in Havana, Museum of the Revolution, Plaza de la Revolución and its subcats exist.
- Thanks for attention. --Dэя-Бøяg 17:21, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Well done
[edit]Well, I appreciate you are learning the "how-to" for categorization. I've just done some fixes for eventual depper categories. Btw, if some categories (as Valle de los Ingenios or Plaza Mayor de Trinidad) have been still categorized as World Heritage Sites in Cuba, it is not necessary to add the heritage site (Unesco) category in each file. Anyway, good work :-) --Dэя-Бøяg 00:22, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Just another suggestion: Categorizing some pictures, it is sufficient "their own" category. I explain: The files about Dario Fo are well categorized in the category Dario Fo, but not in the category "Nobel Prize", because, as Nobel Prize Winner, the Category:Dario Fo is still categorized into the Category:Nobel laureates from Italy. A similar example could be done for the files about Valle de los Ingenios. The Category:Valle de los Ingenios is still categorized within the Category:World Heritage Sites in Cuba. Another example are the singular images of Rolling Stones: If they depict (ex.) Mick Jagger, the Category:Mick Jagger (categorized into the Category:Rolling Stones) is sufficient. A different speech is for other categories: Category:Venice Film Festival is appropriate for Dario Fo, Glenn Close and/or others, because it is not "OVERCAT" and they are depicted in the Venice Film Festival. Thanx for attention and good work again :-) --Dэя-Бøяg 19:14, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
I continue not to understand this problem of category... In your exemple a picture of Mick Jagger appears in the category 'Mick Jagger' but not in the category 'Rolling Stones' (where a lot of pictures of Jagger appears). Why? User:Gorupdebesanez-User talk:Gorupdebesanez' 21:41, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- To answer: A picture of Mick Jagger showing only him is sufficient to categorize it as "Mick Jagger", per "overcat", because this category is (obviously) a direct subcat of "Rolling Stones". I know that other pictures of him (and of Keith Richards etc) appear in the general cateogry about the Stones. The reason is simple: Commons, of course, is not perfectly standardized :-) ... Anyway, this one of Mick Jagger is a really little little little issue, beacuse you've learned the "how-to" so... Don't worry and good work :-) Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 01:56, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Troisi.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Please don't blank pages
[edit]Hi Gorupdebesanez,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked File:Ita18028.jpg on Commons. If you meant for the page to be deleted, blanking the page is not the right way to do this. A simple real-world comparison to illustrate: You removed the entire text of a page from a thick folder, but the then empty, useless page itself remained in the folder.
Please use {{speedy| type reason here }}
and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regularly for deletion. Without this it might take a long time before it's noticed.
For redirects use #REDIRECT[[Target]]
or {{category redirect|Targetcategoryname}}
. For more information please read Blanking. Thanks again. --A1Cafel (talk) 14:58, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
