Observing the price movements of stocks is an area of interest for researchers across the world. ... more Observing the price movements of stocks is an area of interest for researchers across the world. Possibly no other area of finance has been subject to the empirical investigation during the last four decades relative to stock price movements. The study is an effort to contribute positively to the field. Especially to understand the price movements of stocks listed in the DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) as best shares in relation to the dividend declarations of the selected companies. Usually, the dividend declarations are assumed as a positive signal to the market because they signify better earnings for the company. For understanding the price behavior of the shares a standard event study methodology has been adopted to analyze the 20 companies of the DSE-20 index. The findings indicate that the prices are highly influenced by the enormous expectations of the investors and there is a very high possibility to gain abnormal returns by using the publicly available information.

The primary objective of this study is to test the weak form of market efficiency of the Dhaka St... more The primary objective of this study is to test the weak form of market efficiency of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). A random walk test is performed for the weak form of efficiency. The daily returns of the individual shares listed under the DSE-20 index over the period of January 1999 to December 2009 are considered. Dhaka stock exchange is well known as a growing emerging market. The returns were tested using the Dickey-Fuller unit root test and a nonparametric test, the Runs test. In order to test the weak form efficiency hypothesis, we analyzed runs tests. The Dickey-Fuller unit root test is a popular test for testing market efficiency. The run test is also used as a powerful tool to test random walks in the stock market. It is concluded that both the results of Dickey-Fuller tests and the results of run tests are similar and rejected random walk in DSE.

Buyers and sellers are now choosing bills for collection or open account for settlement of their international trade transactions. Since there is a good growth of export and import of Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi business houses are currently using letter of credit at large for the settlement of their transactions. But the procedure of letter of credit is a very complex and time consuming one. The other methods available for the settlement are the open account, advance payment and documentary collection. But the businesses of Bangladesh do not use the other methods frequently due to their risk exposure and regulatory requirements.
