Through the examination of Ribera's work, this essay offers an interdisciplinary approach to the ... more Through the examination of Ribera's work, this essay offers an interdisciplinary approach to the interpretation of Ribera's poetics of the ugly and grotesque. Ribera's figures demonstrate that he forged an original interpretation of the physiognomic studies conducted by Giambattista della Porta (ca. 1535-1615)., but by magnifying physical traits Ribera figures become comedic. These bear intriguing parallels with the satirical and comic literature and visual tradition of the period. I argue that scientific observation, naturalism, and comedic facets may alternate or coexist within the same work.

Girolamo Savonarola’s literary outputs include a group of poems which deal with the corruption of the Church as well as with the celebration of the Crucifix’ regenerating power, among other themes. Analysing the De consolatione crucifixi (On the Consolation of the Crucifix), one of the most complex compositions of Savonarola’s collection of poems, this essay identifies a number of literary sources, especially biblical, which Savonarola reworked and embedded in his poem.
L’attività letteraria di Girolamo Savonarola include un gruppo di liriche che affrontano vari temi che vanno dalla corruzione della Chiesa alla celebrazione della potenza rigeneratrice del crocifisso. Questo saggio offre una lettura del De consolatione crucifixi, una delle liriche più complesse del canzoniere savonaroliano, e identifica una serie di fonti letterarie, soprattutto bibliche, che Savonarola rielaborò per la composizione della lirica.

After reconstructing the biography of de Fiore by drawing on evidence present in the manuscript, this paper will flesh out de Fiore's historical methodology which was based on archival documents, personal experience, oral and visual sources, and architectural and archeological materials. This paper will also expound de Fiore's agenda to promote the reformed Congregation and his legacy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
This paper will provide a concise biographical account of Luis Betrán’s life and will then comment on some visual sources (paintings and engravings) that draw upon some meaningful anecdotes of his life as a missionary, preacher, and miracle-making figure between the New and the Old World.

Finally yet importantly, the Latin inscription in the canvas pointedly addresses the painter as the ′New Apelles of his time′, possibly alluding to the rivalry among artists working in Naples.
This paper suggests that Ribera's Man with Galileo's Telescope, which is part of the series, might be a rare portrait of the polymath Fabio Colonna, a distinguished member of the Academy and correspondent of Galileo. The identification might shed new light on the relationship between Ribera and the illustrious Lyncean Academy at the dawn of the scientific revolution.
À partir de la production artistique de Ribera, Carlo Avilio nous propose deux cas d'étude : les représentations de femmes barbues et celles de mendiants. Des figures perçues comme une menace à l'ordre social et naturel. En effet, si la femme barbue pose la question de la "nature" -homme, femme, hermaphrodite ?-, les mendiants, habitués du déguisement et du changement d'identité, s'échappent à toutes identifications.
Le séminaire sera construit dans le dialogue entre les images et la littérature espagnole de l'époque (notamment mais non exclusivement les sources picaresques).

Early Modern Academies as a means of social networking between scientists, literati, artists and patrons of the arts have received a wealth of scholarly attention especially during the last two decades. Important characteristics of these academies were the networks and the circulation of knowledge in various forms (printed media, gatherings, artworks). Yet, while scholarship has mainly focused on the history and structure of single institutions, our understanding of Early Modern Academies would be incomplete without understanding the contributions by individuals that comprised them.
This panel seeks to provide a more nuanced approach to the agency of academicians such as intellectuals, scientists, and men of letters, and their role in the production and dissemination of knowledge in the early modern period. It invites papers that reassess the role of both prominent intellectuals in the light of their collaborations with artists and their patrons, and lesser-known figures who in various measures shaped the intellectual frameworks which surround the making or reception of the visual arts in the Early Modern period. In what measure did academicians like physicians, men of letters, mathematicians, or philosophers partake in the realization of painted, sculpted or architectural works? To what extent did the social interactions between artists and intellectuals affect the production and circulation of ideas or objects in the Renaissance?
Potential papers include but are not limited to:
Intersections of literature, rhetoric, science, and the visual arts
Political, philosophical, mathematical treatises and the visual arts
Visual epistemology: images as vehicles of knowledge

Physiognomics (namely ‘knowledge of nature’) has been for centuries a means for the understanding of human personality from the outer appearance. Still today, voluminous hair may suggest courage, an aquiline nose denote leadership, while big and deep-set eyes might point to intelligence. Physiognomics has developed across time and disciplines, from medicine to magic, art, cinema and literature, thus producing a variety of outcomes, among which:
- the elaboration of medical theories and therapies aimed at balancing the quantity of the four ‘humors’ circulating in the human body (as in humoral medicine by Galen and Hippocrates)
- the perception of the body as a mirror of the universe and as a means of predicting the future with the aid of magic and astrology (e.g. the studies on human physiognomy by G. B. Della Porta);
- the prediction of criminal inclinations of individuals by classifying ‘dangerous’ physiognomic traits, such as the size and conformation of the skull as in nineteenth-century criminal anthropology and phrenology;
- the assessment of the personality of an individual through his/her physical traits as in the terrains of literature, cinema and art, which use the body as one of their most powerful languages;
- the representation of the stability and instability of human identity by combining the body components in hybridized and fragmented ways as in twentieth-century artistic avant-gardes.
By investigating relevant case-studies, this symposium aims to explore the history and practice of physiognomics in its cross-disciplinary connections and examine the way it has established itself as a well-grounded investigative tool through the centuries. By exploring this question, the symposium aims to address broader issues such as: how did the conception of the body change in time and influence the sciences and the arts? How did disciplines like medicine and astrology merge into the fields of literature, philosophy and art?
Finally, the symposium will consider the legacy of physiognomics in contemporary culture and society. Indeed, while the practice of unveiling the human soul through its outer appearance is now declining, we continue to place importance on the body as a communication tool. Such elements urge us to investigate further the ‘reading the human body’ in order to better understand the dynamics that still inform contemporary society.

This panel aims to explore physiognomics in its cross-disciplinary connections with visual and literary sources in the period ca. 1300-1700. We welcome multidisciplinary proposals for twenty-minute papers. Topics of interest include:
To what extent artists and scientists engaged with physiognomics theories
Physiognomic reading applied to sculpture and illustrated treatises of architecture
Astrological and zodiacal physiognomy in connection with planetary influence on human body
Use of medicinal plants resembling human limbs to heal specific parts of the body (e.g. Giambattista Della Porta's plant physiognomy)
To what extent "ritratti caricati" and grotesque are rooted in physiognomics theories
The body’s outward aspect and racial and sexual stereotyping
Physiognomics and caricature, in particular visual political satire

From Flanders to Italy, passing by the German lands, the Thirty Years' War, a great ‘media event’, contributed to the process of destabilisation with the massive circulation of people, ideas and works of art and literature. The resultant fruitful tension gave rise to new literary and artistic forms (the Picaresque genre for one) challenging basic concepts of social hierarchy, identity, gender and stereotyped beauty.
The panel invites papers exploring the connections and tensions between visual and literary forms reflecting the political, social and religious turmoil in Early Modern Europe.
Topics of interest include:
• Diffusion of liminal or heterodox devotional images created by lower classes paralleled in contemporary texts
• Clothing as a means of identity disguise to challenge social rules (‘cross-dressing’)
• Emergence of female and lower-born characters within the Picaresque genre and in the context of the Thirty Years' War
• The birth of the ‘mock hero’, a low-life character enacting epic narratives for comic effect
• Celebration of the ugly and grotesque rather than traditional standards of beauty
