someone on here pointed out how this is done to every single mlm ship (especially for popular fandoms... *cough* arcane), always making one bigger and browner and "dominant" in a very racist and heteronormative way and ever since then i can't unsee it and it drives me insane
and when they infantilize serizawa they infantilize reigen by proxy too. like intrinsic to reigen's whole personhood is that he's a sweaty slimy bastard with a good heart. he's self-reliant, cunning, familiar with life and has strength of character. he has never been and will never be a shy uwu twink that blushes at first dates and hand-holding or is super emotional or open or touchy-feely. (don’t get me wrong… i want to make him flushed and desperate but in a realistic way)
maybe that’s just a consequence of a younger audience and i understand/respect that people have “safe characters” they love but i agree it’s just so messy and offputting
anyway if you have any recommendations for eastern artists who portray serirei in a more complex, interesting way please share (if you want) otherwise ty for your thoughts i appreciate them i hope this ask was interesting

Same tbh, I don’t mind the young people enjoying their comfort characters but they’re so vocal it became “you either ship it that way or we don’t like you”, as seeing someone else fuck around with their comfort character in different ways actually HURTS them and make it a fandom norm.
It made me hate kids so much because they don’t realize how their comfort hurt so much. It’s not welcoming, it’s not fandom spirit, it’s a cult of ride or get crucified and shamed because you dared say their vision is a full circle racist and ableist.
And how they uwufy Serizawa unable to ask for extra ketchup?? He’s 31 yo. It’s annoying when you turn people on the spectrum as kids that need their hand held or are just super shy when, imo, Serizawa isn’t on the spectrum… He didn’t live life for 15 years!! 15 important years where a kid needs experience and people for socialization and growth. Someone who doesn’t go outside for most of their life in comparison of someone with a normal social life will of course be more afraid of people and tend to be codependent to someone (most of the time, those people are not great and love using these vulnerable people for their own gain, just like Touichirou and Reigen).
In the official fanbook Q&A, Serizawa shows so much growth. Thanks to Reigen, he realizes that depending on people is lame, especially Reigen, he realizes Reigen is pathetic and is the kind of guy to pretend he didn’t fart “it was the chair”.
Anyhow, I hate fandoms in general for what you said anon! Turns out I also hate that Arcane ship lmao. It’s the SeriRei of Arcane.

i’m curious because so much serirei content is not to my tastes, but i don’t hate him. i’m a multishipper at heart and i still like seeing reigen paired with him
Tbh, yes.
In big part, it is because of the discourse of “proship are evil” that waterdowns the ship so bad it becomes a cliché of a homosexual couple with heterosexual roles like “big brown guy x feminine white twink” (they’re both Asians but the western ship makes it look that way so hard…). Western/anti artists limit themselves by making it so safe and clean it has the level of a Disney live action remake.
I have to admit, I really enjoy the eastern ship because of how eastern artists (and people who get inspired from them) don’t misinterpret Serizawa. They see him as a conflicted adult man, with anxiety because of his past and suddenly having to become a functioning adult and managing to be a realistic adult, and also making him very hot….
The western Serizawa (most of the time, there’s some rare exceptions) is a mess. His only personality trait is anxiety and being an emotional support for Reigen when never in the anime he managed to read the room better than Mob. I just hate how infantilized the western artists make him. He always looks like a caricature with the same awkward facial expressions being sweaty and annoying. Either that or the fans project so hard on him, it’s not Serizawa anymore, it’s a self insert I’m looking at.
I hate like Serizawa using him like a rag doll and not being a fan of him. It can be seen as some sort of passion because I still draw him from time to time. Like Minori, I don’t like her either for the same reasons (she is not a good person and I hate the kids who kin/relate to her, y'all scare me).
Then we got Mezato… I don’t understand her existence.
It quickly turned into a rant lol, sorry anon 🫡
