In planning CISM services in U.S. schools, it now may be practical and necessary to use large-group approaches to assessment and service planning similar to those provided in war-affected nations (Ressler, Tortorici, & Marcelino, 1993). This paper reports on an extension of the CISM approach in schools (Everly & Mitchell, 1999; Johnson, 2000a, 2002; Johnson, Casey, Ertl, Everly, & Mitchell, 1999) as a guide in developing large-scale assessments and action plans. Such actions may be led by school CISM teams in collaboration with school site teams. Examples of collaborative assessment and action planning are included from CISM team and training experiences in New York City, El Cajon and Long Beach, California.

To be hunted, homeless, and unwelcome is an experience that has been shared by groups of persecuted people across the ages. This article describes issues pertinent to children who are refugees, with recommendations for addressing their special needs. Suggestions for assistance include helping refugee communities become active in identifying and solving their own problems; supporting comprehensive programs rather than focusing on resolving individual symptoms; and providing services oriented toward strengthening, rather than replacing the family as a primary support system for children.

The nature of assessment and nature of subsequent service delivery illustrates a community resilience-based approach to school crisis management. Recommendations for such work are based upon mixed qualitative and quantitative data gathered from on-scene team members as part of the ongoing support effort.

It is meant to be a generic guide for school teams and should be customized by each school that uses it. Even with emergency procedures in place, each crisis at a school needs to be evaluated as it occurs. As mandated by Senate Bill 187 (The Safe Schools Act), all California schools are now required to have a safety plan. However, the mental health, or stress management, aspect of crisis management is often overlooked, and less often practiced by schools. This manual is meant to be a companion document to such school safety plans, mandated by the Safe Schools Act. Its format and terminology are in accordance with California's Standardized Emergency Management System, making it easy for schools to integrate it into their documents. The manual includes guidelines for debriefings, guiding questions for a critical incident stress, and a suggested plan of action for prevention/preparedness, emergency, and recovery. Also included are suggestions for the classroom teacher on how to "defuse" a critical incident and emotional first-aid suggestions for caregivers. (GCP) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document.
