Therefore, English is taught for two hours a week depending on the school type or grade. Since vocabulary is regarded as a crucial aspect in language learning, the purpose of the study is to investigate the vocabulary learning strategies adopted by 9 th grade students, to find out which vocabulary learning strategies used most and the least. Another purpose of this study is to find whether there were any differences between male and female learners regarding strategy use. 172 9 th grade students took part in this study and they were asked to fill in a questionnaire of 25 vocabulary learning strategy items. Also, a semi-structured interview with ten students was held. The data was analyzed by using frequency, percentages, and means. The mostly used strategies were Social (Discovery) and Determination Strategies and the least ones are Social (Consolidation) and Metacognitive Strategies. No significant difference of strategy us...

As the needs of English language learners have changed in a globalized world, there is a demand for raising awareness on ELF-oriented teaching in ELT curricula. As one of the widely used strategies among ELF speakers, negotiation of meaning (NoM) strategies is a central concern in this study. In this sense, this study aims to explore English as a foreign language (EFL) instructors' awareness of NoM strategies and also aims to shed light on EFL instructors' teaching practices and perceptions of prescribed coursebooks. This descriptive case study, based on the preliminary findings of a Master's thesis, was conducted by collecting both quantitative and qualitative data through an open-ended questionnaire administered to 45 EFL instructors at a foundation university in Turkey. Quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. Findings of the study revealed that the majority of the instructors had concerns about the application of NoM strategies despite being aware of them. The participants also disagreed with how NoM strategies were integrated into the prescribed coursebooks. Moreover, many participants regarded Turkish students' resorting to their mother tongue as negative behaviour when negotiating the meaning. These findings will be presented and discussed further in this paper against the backdrop of a global perspective.

However, in some cases, pupils learning English as an additional language in same classroom are not homogenous due to their diverse background experiences (Conteh, 2015). For instance, in the UK, there are over 1.5 million EAL learners (Bell, 2019) whereas, Cinkara (2017) in Turkey's context, Turkey welcomed around 2.523.554 Syrian refugees. This study reports the processes of reading English by two Arabic native speaker pupils. Salah (pseudonym) 9-year-old, without prior formal and informal education who was admitted to Year 4 in West of England primary school, UK. Ahmed (pseudonym), 8 years old in Year 3 in a South Turkey school learning English as a subject, possible as his third language, in addition to Arabic and Turkish. The study aims to understand the ways to improve these pupils' English language reading skills. Action research and structured interviews were used to collect the participants' data. Thematic analysis was used to identify the themes of the structured interview. It was found that the whole-word approach when reading a word, is the preference for both participants rather than the phonic approach. Further research with larger sample and encouragement of cross-border professional cooperation to improve refugees' Basic English reading skills is recommended.

Teacher talk plays a central role in understanding the nature of classroom language in this respect. According to Krashen's input hypothesis, teacher talk also constitutes an important source of comprehensible input for the language acquisition of the learner (Krashen, 1981). To make the input comprehensible, teachers may make modifications in their vocabulary, syntax, rate of speech or discourse. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to discover whether native speakers of English and non-native speakers of English make any syntactical modifications in their teacher talk at elementary and pre-intermediate levels and to try to find out what kind of syntactical modifications they make if they modify their syntax during their speech. The study was carried out with eight EFL instructors (both NSs and NNSs) at Çağ University in Turkey, using their audio-recordings, a questionnaire, and interviews. Antconc 3.2.1 Program and SPSS 17.0 Program were used to analyze the quantitative data. The findings of the data were incorporated with the results of interviews forming the qualitative part of the study. The results of the data revealed that native speakers of English and nonnative speakers of English made syntactical modifications in their teacher talk at elementary and pre-intermediate levels. They ranged from subordinate clauses to the types of sentences. The findings of the study also demonstrated that syntactical modifications in the teacher talk of native speakers and non-native speakers at both levels depended on the proficiency level of the learners although not all of these modifications formed a statistically meaningful difference. A mixed-method sequential explanatory design was adopted in this study. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire based on Schmitt's taxonomy of VLS from 398 participants and analyzed via SPSS; qualitative data were obtained from focus group interviews conducted with 45 volunteer participants and analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings indicated that EFL learners attribute a great level of significance to vocabulary learning.
