When the commercial was produced in 1971, it was the most expensive commercial at the time, costing $250,000 (approximately $2 million in 2024).

Coca-Cola creative director Bill Backer came up with the idea for the commercial while waiting for a flight to London, where he saw irate passengers whose plane was forced to land because of fog. He saw those same passengers a few hours later laughing and bonding while drinking Coca-Cola.

At that point, he came up with the phrase, “I’d like to buy the world a coke”

Backer teamed up with British songwriters Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, who created the melody and initial lyrics. The final version, “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke,” was recorded by the New Seekers and aired on television in July 1971.
