Japanese sculptor Yoshitoshi Kanemaki (previously) captures the emotional complexities of youth in his glitched 3-dimensional portraits. Kanemaki carves tree trunks into figures—often young women—whose faces are multiplied in expressions that range from distressed to joyful in a single sculpture. Joao Ruas brings his striking, ghostly paintings to Thinkspace Projects with the new show “Knots.” The show, running through Jan. 4 at the space, collects both new mixed-media and acylic paintings, as well as drawings from the artist. The artist was featured on our site here and was last seen in print with Hi-Fructose Vol. 23.

Miki Kim’s psychedelic and at times, humorous illustrations blend pop elements across cultures. The artist, who also works in the tattoo industry, creates her bold imagery with fluid linework and soft palettes, both underscoring her absorbing and psychedelic concepts. She has created tattoos and illustrations under the moniker Mick Hee over the past few years.

Lisa Lach-Neilson’s vulnerable oil paintings often examine identity. The artist, hailing from Denmark, has shown across the globe over the past few years. She’s been painting professionally since 2012, with a background in clothing design as a master's student at Royal Danish Academy of Design.

The illustrations and personal work of artist Jay Torres have a dark surrealist edge. The El Paso-raised artist, now based in Pasadena, moves between analogue and digital tools to craft his creations.

Hideyuki Katsumata’s wild paintings and drawings blend centuries of Japanese motifs, pop elements, and more otherworldly elements. The Tokyo native produces an array of work outside of his paintings, from soft toys and enamel pins to massive murals and show designs. The artist was last featured on our site here.

Starting June 11 at 10 a.m., "Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose" fills the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento with the work of 51 contemporary artists. The exhibit was previously at the Akron Art Museum and Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, which organized the exhibition that highlights the first decade of the publication’s existence.
