Today's Daily Bible Reading is from Esther 1:10-22. It is now day seven of the king’s feast, which he was giving for everybody in Shushan. The men had been drinking as much as they pleased of the finest royal wine for a week. I can imagine they weren't feeling any pain, as they must have been pretty intoxicated at this point.

Vashti was a queen of Persia and the first wife of Persian king Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther. Ahasuerus summons Vashti to appear before the company with her royal crown upon her head, so he can show off her beauty. She was either executed or banished for her refusal to appear at the king's banquet to show her beauty as Ahasuerus wished, and was succeeded as queen by Esther, a Jewess. That refusal might be better understood via the Jewish tradition that she was ordered to appear naked. Queen Esther although physically beautiful, she was modest and submissive. (Est. 2:13, 15) When married, she showed deep respect for her husband, King Ahasuerus, unlike his former wife, Vashti. (Esther 1:10-12; 2:16, 17) Esther also respectfully deferred to Mordecai, her older cousin, on appropriate matters—even after she became queen. But she was strong! She boldly exposed a ruthless Haman, who plotted to annihilate the Jews. Jehovah used Esther mightily for the preservation of his people.
