Villain redemption

This is great. A lot of them actually apply to Valen. He's not exactly an ex-villain but he thinks he is. You know actually he is. He is an ex-villain.

Helpful writing advice on writing redemption arcs

Most writers love writing flawed character, but what if we don’t want them to end up a villain—what if we want to redeem them? This is where the redemption arc comes in, where you take a destructive character and slowly transform them into something akin to a hero. Of course, this transformation won’t come easily—which is why understanding the two requirements of a believable redemption arc is so important.
