I didn't include The Skull because I felt like he'd sweep lol, and it didn't feel fair to call Jessica a haunting. I'm hoping to do a poll about the Skull's best quotes sometime soon to make up for such a transgression 💀

No one teaches you how to grieve a living thing. The Mourner's Almanac is my attempt to make sense of the losses I have walked through, grappling with intangible deaths and the absences they leave behind. Through these poems, I explore mentors leaving, families breaking, friendships decaying, and the weight of mental illness. But no matter how many graves I dig, I keep finding flowers breaking through the earth. For every lament I sing, there is also the echo of birdsong. So while this collection is an elegy of sorts, it is also just as full of the beautiful things that persist despite life's losses: companionship, healing, creation, hope. May this collection be a quiet companion through grief and a gentle reminder of the life that still grows beneath the soil. I am no expert of mourning, but I know this much: spring is on its way.

Why yes, it does piss me off to drop over a hundred dollars on a cap and gown I will wear once! This requirement is a scam!

One mercy, I suppose, is that it’s a nice and normal black and not bright orange like in high school. (I think it was split so the boys wore brown? Or maybe it was by last name or something, I forget. We had the worst school colors on earth, no one looks good in that.) Undergrad was white, which I guess was slightly better than something dark when it was about a million degrees out, but it’s impossible not to sweat like a swamp creature in all that thick polyester.

Anyway, I should do something fun to decorate my cap, at least. Gotta start thinking of ideas. Ooh, I should see if my college roommate wants to do it together again, a decade later - she’s not defending her dissertation till the summer, but if she gets her cap early… I just think it would be cute of us to do a repeat, considering we ended up graduating together from the same school at approximately the same time.

The modern notion that sex and pregnancy aren't connected to one another has done untold damage to the people of this world.

Like. People aren't sex dolls that you can use and then throw away as you please. They are people and there are natural consequences of this kind of behavior. Some of them (like getting pregnant) are the natural result of sex, some are the result of sleeping around specifically (like broken relationships & STDs), and some (like abortion and broken households) are the results of people trying to avoid the consequences of their actions.

Sex is the font of life through which new human beings are brought into the world, and the refusal to accept this truth has caused so much death and heartache. The divine is not meant to be abused as such, and it shows.

Top Lines from Lockwood and Co (show) that are really simple but actually hugely important:

—“All we’ve ever known in the Problem, and that’s not okay!”

—“meet you after for an epic breakfast”

—“the world that made women give up their babies, that’s the problem”

—“the world is bigger than the Problem George”

—“let’s draw our swords and kick in the doors like we’re really cool and know what we’re doing”

—“all alone in that big empty house of yours”

[First alt text: Some readers may find the titular Howl, who is a very dramatic character, possibly over-dramatic. /End alt]

[Second alt text: He spread his arms out passionately. "Despair!" he yelled. "Anguish! Horror!"

"Is something wrong?" asked Sophie.

"That's better," said Howl. "Some of you are pretending to notice me at last. How kind of you to ask, Sophie." /End alt]

[Third alt text: "I'm going to bed, where I may die." He tottered piteously to the stairs. /End alt]
