I like to travel around the world, but when I’m abroad I want to explore. So I don’t really relax because I;m trying to learn and experience everything.

In January, DuVernay became the first African-American woman to win Sundance's best directing award for her second feature-length film, Middle of Nowhere. It's about a young woman who puts her life and dreams of going to medical school on hold while her husband is in prison.

Ava Marie Duvernay Born: August 24, 1972 Long Beach, CA American filmmaker, she won the directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and the first black woman to win the award for her work on Selma (2014). DuVernay became the first black woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director, and also the first black female director to have her film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

DuVernay, whose documentary "13th" is up for an Oscar, told KPCC she isn't interested in berating Hollywood studios over the lack of diversity — she's focused on helping women make movies.
