I teach this interdisciplinary unit to intermediate students using the Aztec Sun Stone as inspiration with a focus on pattern and texture. The finished product can be used as a mirror or picture frame. Included in my hand-drawn handout are tip for varied coils and sturdy construction. The low-relief clay sculpture is built straight on this paper, peeled, and carefully flipped once the coils have been smeared together thoroughly.

In my clay book, Clay Lab for Kids, I created this Fairy Door project. I decided to do it recently with my fourth grade students. We needed a short project (30 minute class, if possible...although most needed 2 classes) and one that would be a hit.
