The wonky star block has a sort of organic twinkle. The irregular points flash with personality. It’s my favorite block for using up triangle scraps, as each block uses 8 triangles - one for each star point! This tutorial is flexible for making block of diverse sizes.

"Wonky Star" - in progress Today's workshop at the Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon was a lot of fun. We spent the day with Gwen Marston, who taught us about liberated medallion quilts. I know Gwen draws inspiration from antique quilts, so I decided to make a Wonky Star based on two very old New England quilts. Center Star, c. 1815-1825, New England, Museum of American Folk Art The eight-pointed star set on a square is one of the oldest pieced designs you'll find in American quilts, and…

Hannah Parks on Instagram: "I came home from the cabin last night to find a package from @windhamfabrics on my front porch! I was too tired last night to do anything other than crash into bed, so I got up early this morning to sew up a quick improv sawtooth star with Ruby + Bee solids and one of the prints from @littlepincushionstudio’s upcoming Kaleidoscope collection.

My current plan is to make a few more wonky stars with other prints from the collection and more R+B colors, then combine them into a wonky and colorful wall hanging.

This first star is more like wonky-lite, and as I get more confident with improv, I’m hoping they’ll steadily grow more wonky. 😁

Gimme something happy, like a colorful quilt. Bright and summery even though lounging under it sounds a little…hot. I finished the summer twin to the winter color way quilt I shared a few posts back. It’s a blend of two workshops I often teach, Magic Numbers and Improvisational Triangles. The background is just a mix...Read More »

I’m a huge fan of freestyle quilting! I love to improvise and pull out scraps and make a big mess and just sort of wing it. Give me a list of 100 shapes to cut before I can even start my quilt and I’m out, haha. But give me freedom to make something up as I go along, and call it wonky? I’m so in!
