As much as everyone seems to dislike the sanding phase of a woodworking project, all sanding is not created equal. When we are sanding on flat surfaces such as a table top, at least we can use a belt sander, sheet sander or random orbital sander to power though the process. I have tried many processes and although it may not be the fastest, it always gives the best look. -Day 1: Sand 80,120, and 180 grit. Vacuum and wipe surface with a tack cloth. Do not use mineral spirits. Do not use a pre-conditioner. Stain the wood with a white wash. Here I am using Kona by Varathane. -Day 3: Apply a polycrylic or polyurethane. Apply it slow. Do not shake the can. Less bubbles mean less work in the following days. You can use a brush, foam brush, or sprayer to apply. -Day 4: Sand the polycrylic LIGHTLY. You do not want to sand through that first coat.
