Her Story is an interactive movie video game developed and published by Sam Barlow and starring Viva Seifert. The game was released on 24 June 2015 for Microsoft Windows, OS X and iOS.[1] In the game, players use a database of police video clips to solve the case of a missing man.
The game has been well received, gathering mostly positive reviews.
Gameplay
Her Story is about a set of fictional police interviews from 1994.[1] In the game players sort through video clips from these interviews, containing answers from questions asked to a British woman about her missing husband, by searching a database in an old computer.[2] Her words are transcribed, and the player searches for new clips by searching these transcriptions in a database, attempting to solve the case by piecing together the information from them.[3]
Development
When Barlow began development on the game he added more typical game aspects, but gradually moved towards the more minimalist finished game.[4]
Discussing other detective games, developer Sam Barlow said he had been let down by LA Noire, saying he never felt like he was "being the awesome detective who was having to read things and follow up threads of investigation." Though he thought the Phoenix Wright series did better, Barlow felt the game was too "rigid", and tried to make the player feel clever, rather than allowing them full freedom to solve cases themselves. These games and the issues Barlow perceived with them led him to develop Her Story.[3] Barlow also cites heavily publicised trials like those of Amanda Knox and Jodi Arias as inspiration for the game's format.[5]
Reception
Vorlage:VG reviews Writing for the Washington Post, Michael Thomsen described the game as a "remarkable achievement in creating something which is personal, cinematic and playful" though only a few hours in length.[6] PC Gamer's Andy Kelly gave the game a score of 90/100, calling it an "atmospheric, captivating crime thriller".[7] In Rock, Paper, Shotgun's review Adam Smith reviewed the game well, describing Seifert's performance as "remarkable", and calling the game's aesthetics "perfect."[8] Mark Smith, in Pocket Gamer, found Her Story to be "bold and daring and different" in his review.[2]
Slant Magazine's Jed Pressgrove wrote a rare negative review, claiming that the game is influenced by "lady-psychopath clichés" and "phony-baloney crime and horror fiction."[9]
