One Chicago fans are in for a treat.
NBC‘s Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. are staging a major crossover event to air later this season, Deadline has confirmed.
According to TVLine, which broke the news today, the storyline will center on a massive explosion in an office building that upends the entire city — above and below ground. Sources tell Deadline there are multiple storylines in play, but no one has settled on details regarding what idea they will go with.
When Deadline caught up with Chicago Med‘s new showrunner Allen MacDonald ahead of this season, he explained crossovers are not done as often as they’d like because they’re so complicated to pull off. A fact that was further complicated by the Covid pandemic and then the writers and actors dual strikes last year.

“We are always interested in doing crossovers and I know the fans are always interested in that. We aren’t currently slated to do that, but it’s a discussion that’s always ongoing,” shared MacDonald in September.
He continued, “It’s a complicated thing. We have to schedule a crossover because, well, we’re lucky because we all shoot on one lot, but the actors have to run between the sets and shoot scenes for the other show. Then it’s a matter of finding the right story, a story that is worthy of being told on all three shows over three hours. I hope that we have one but at the moment, there is not one planned.”
Luckily it appears that the stars have aligned and fans will get their action-packed adventure—a first since 2019— soon. Well, as soon as the right story is selected, of course. Hey, maybe it’s a good time for Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) to tie the knot?
