Any travel advice site will tell you to travel like a local, but honestly you should local like a traveller. Go out with wide eyes and curiosity. Visit museums and parks and art galleries, try out the overpriced but highly rated restaurants that only tourists visit, take photos and video, stop to read those heritage information signs, treat yourself to an ice cream on a hot day. Don't let tourists be the only ones who take joy in your home.
hey did you know??? that if you stop stretching and maintaining mobility in your body then it goes away?? things get tight and you can't move the way that you used to??? and when you decide to try getting a stretch routine going that the first week fucking sucks because you keep going 'damn i used to be able to do this no problem' and then you have to switch gears and be kind to yourself and just focus on getting better from here instead of berating yourself for dropping the good habits in the first place??? and your body never stops aging so you gotta keep taking care of it and sometimes you gotta take care of it extra in certain areas because of things that happened when you were younger and it's boring and sometimes hurts but it's so necessary???
i am yelling this at myself right now i am going through An Experience (trying to get into a routine of body maintenance again for my physical and mental health)
oh, Sisyphus! i got you
Tips for writing those gala scenes, from someone who goes to them occasionally:
- Generally you unbutton and re-button a suit coat when you sit down and stand up.
- Youāre supposed to hold wine or champagne glasses by the stem to avoid warming up the liquid inside. A character out of their depth might hold the glass around the sides instead.
- When rich/important people forget your name and theyāre drunk, they usually just tell you that they donāt remember or completely skip over any opportunity to use your name so they donāt look silly.
- A good way to indicate you donāt want to shake someoneās hand at an event is to hold a drink in your right hand (and if youāre a woman, a purse in the other so you definitely canāt shift the glass to another hand and then shake)
- Americans who still kiss cheeks as a welcome generally donāt press lips to cheeks, itās more of a touch of cheek to cheek or even a hover (these days, mostly to avoid smudging a womanās makeup)
- The distinctions between dress codes (black tie, cocktail, etc) are very intricate but obvious to those who know how to look. If you wear a short skirt to a black tie event for example, people would clock that instantly even if the dress itself was very formal. Same thing goes for certain articles of menās clothing.
- Open bars / cash bars at events usually carry limited options. Theyāre meant to serve lots of people very quickly, so nobody is getting a cosmo or a Manhattan etc.
- Members of the press generally arenāt allowed to freely circulate at nicer galas/events without a very good reason. When they do, they need to identify themselves before talking with someone.

Today on clownery from my fraternity: I started āpavlov trainingā this guy from my frat as a joke but now itās actually working
Context: This guy from my frat (Iām in a coed academic frat) is really into geography, and heās been trying to learn all the state capitals of Brazil. I happen to be Brazilian, so Iāve been helping him learn them along with pronunciations. One day I was eating a pack of m&ms and decided to quiz him. If he got the question right he got an m&m, and if he got it wrong Iād eat it. Thus a tradition between us was born. If Iām eating a snack Iāll quiz him a bit and give him a tiny treat if heās right.
Anyways, today I was in our frat lounge eating some m&ms by myself, kinda minding my own business. I eventually got really bored and wondered what would happen if I gave everyone in a lounge an m&m except for him, so I did that. He noticed and then started dropping every Brazilian state capital he could think of, getting increasingly desperate until he just started naming random Brazilian cities. A few of them he repeated multiple times to get the perfect pronunciation. It was like watching a dog do every trick it knows in rapid succession, just hoping something would get a treat. I eventually gave him a few m&ms and started wondering what the hell Iāve done
Thank you @clearancecreedwatersurvival :O (genuine, I love learning new things)
i didn't have "i'm broken" teenage asexual angst i had "i'm literally being the only reasonable one about this concept and the rest of you are behaving like fucking freaks" perception issues
This is so fucking funny
Tudor- Brandon branch
"Mary visited London for the last time to celebrate the wedding of her eldest daughter, Lady Frances Brandon to Henry Grey, Marquess of Dorset, who descended from Thomas Grey, the elder son of Elizabeth Woodville (Queen of Edward IV) by her first marriage to Sir John Grey. Frances and Henry were to become the parents of the nine-day queen of England, the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, who was executed on the orders of Queen Mary I. Recent research suggests that Lady Jane, the eldest, was not born at Bradgate but at the Dorsetsā London residence, on a date somewhat earlier than the usually suggested date of October 1537. The few verifiable contemporary comments on her appearance note that she was slight, and pleasant-looking. The prevailing perception was certainly that she was formidably intelligent and well-educated. The Dorsets appear to have been determined that their girls should develop practical and intellectual skills.
That Jane was also spirited and had a mind of her own even at a young age is evident from the correspondence of her learned tutor, John Aylmer, of whom she spoke fondly, with the Swiss reformer Henry Bullinger, who had sent to Jane and her father āa little volume of pure and unsophisticated religionā, with a dedication. Aylmer wrote to Bullinger that young peopleās minds needed the counsel of older people and serious influences, thanking Bullinger for his contribution to Janeās āimprovementā. Tellingly, he employed the metaphor of ābridles for restive horsesā.
Katherine, the Dorsetsā second daughter, traditionally considered the beauty of the family, is shown in the miniatures by the Flemish-bornminiaturist to the English court, Levina Teerlinc, as a fair-complexioned, golden-haired young woman, almost the stereotypical English rose. The third daughter, although uncharitably depicted as ādwarfish in statureā ā Lady Mary was only four feet in height ā was disparagingly described by the Spanish Ambassador Guzman da Silva, writing to King Philip, as ālittle, crook-backed, deformed, and very uglyā, freckled and red-haired, like her sisters. Mary was undoubtedly intelligent, yet her career followed the fateful pattern set by others in her family. She not only fell in love but was determined to marry her beloved, despite the awful example of the retribution which befell her sister Katherine.
After the failure of the Lady Jane Grey plot, it became clear that the Suffolk claims were doomed to failure. It was even questionable whether Henry VIII had had the right to bequeath the crown as he pleased, albeit with the authorisation of Parliament. Moreover, the Will had not been signed by his own hand, as required by statute, but merely by dry stamp. There was much quibbling over the phrase āand if it so happen that the said Lady Eleanor die without issue, then we will that the said Imperial Crown shall come to our next rightful heirs,ā not āright heirsā, as stated in the first Act of Succession. Under Elizabeth, the legality of Mary Roseās marriage to Brandon and hence the legitimacy of their children was thrown into question. With each succeeding generation, their connection with the throne grew increasingly remote."

I really cannot emphasize enough the mental health benefits of abandoning the idea that you're special.
This goes both ways, both "You don't have to do everything singlehanded" and "You're not uniquely awful."
