I spent a fun day yesterday photographing and noodling on this 1957 #LesPaul #goldtop, from my friend’s collection. #PAFs direct into dimed tuxedo Fender Princeton. A dream rig!

PS: Yes…I realize how lucky I am to have friends that own a guitar like this…and let me experience it. 🙂

Can you believe that as recently as 3 years ago I did not like Les Pauls? Like, I mean, I didn’t like them AT ALL. I thought they were too heavy to be played comfortably. Man was I dumb. But people can change. People can grow and learn from their stupidity. I’m smarter now. I love Les Pauls!

Strangely, Ric 🐢 and Douglas 🦫 seem to enjoy sitting on top of the #amp during my hackneyed attempts at producing (what could be loosely termed as) music, as long as the bass knob is cranked to 8 or 9. They say the rumble coming out of the 2 x 12 makes them feel “all funny”. 🤔

PS: more details in future posts, but this amp is one of the best I’ve ever had in the house. So full and rich sounding. It easily rivals any of my vintage #Fender #amps. @marshalllespaulfan has modded it a bit to make it this stellar (including swapping out the original speaker with a @wgs.usa 12" replacement and then adjusting some cap values in the amp to go better with the new speaker), but if every vintage Traynor amp can be made this good this easily at 1/6th the price of a Fender from the same era…where do I sign up?? 😀

This is a shot I took in one of my darker moments…both figuratively and literally! I guess I’m posting it in the hope that a little underexposure will get me a lot of overexposure. 🤣 But enough pseudo levity: I thought the lower light levels in this really accentuated the richness of the lovely gold finish on this guitar. If you can’t see that then your phone brightness is set too low lol.

2006 #R7 in the subdued light of a #GoldtopTuesday morning.

TBH I’m a bit blue today. It’s my first day back at work after a week’s vacation. The colourful vista of blue sky and autumnal trees outside my window is exploding with radiance in the unusually warm mid-October sun, and I should be basking and rejoicing in these last dying embers of summer’s receding glow. But I feel a pervasive undercurrent of melancholy running through the bucolic splendour that surrounds me. After all: each of us shall become dust in time, is it not predestined?

PS: until I watched @puisheen’s latest video “Lollar’s Makjng Changes: leaving Problematic Language Behind in the #Guitar Industry”, I had no idea WHY this style of case was called a “Cali Girl” case. Needless to say I was SHOCKED. I’m not going to say why it has that name…you’ll just have to watch Mike’s video if you can’t figure it out!

But in all seriousness, do watch his video, as he makes all the good points about a very important subject. I for one will be following his and Lollar’s lead with my nomenclature going forward.

Check out the last post from my friend/nemesis @readyaimcheese for a bit of behind the scenes on this shot. It was done with one flash, a softbox and egg crate, and some white cardboard DIY V-Flats for reflections (and to add some reflected light to the left side of the pic). Photographers I admire such as @eleanorjanephoto and @williamjohnbennettiii make artificial light look really easy, but let me tell you…it’s hard work to make a guitar pic look good with a flash! But I’ll keep trying and learning! 🙂
