“DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE FUCKING NAVY-

image

@octal–wizard

As with all military history, the actual answer is long and complicated, and this video is obviously a little comically glib. But the shortest explanation is:

  • The Royal Navy had not been very well maintained after WWI for a variety of reasons. The Brits started scrambling to catch up in military production after Hitler invaded Poland, but it took a lot time to roll out new ships
  • By the time the Brits finished the new classes of ships (and improved the old ones), the Germans had invented this fun little thing called a U-Boat
  • The German U-Boats decommissioned a large chunk of the Royal Navy in the early part of the war, shocking the world by essentially bringing the British naval force to its knees. This is the “do not get me started on the fucking navy” bit of the video.
  • (Though eventually they figured out how to track down U-Boats and the British Navy did okay in the latter part of the war)
  • U-Boats and German battleclass ships effectively blockaded most of the English Channel when the British and ally soldiers retreated to Dunkirk beach.
  • Despite all of the above, the Royal Navy did actually manage at least half of the Dunkirk evacuation (estimates vary based on a number of factors) - but they were also certainly not as “in play” as they should have been, due to German coverage.

there should be a tax that youtubers pay where 1.5% of all of their revenue goes back to Kevin Macleod for basically supplying YouTube with it’s own soundtrack.

who is this man and what music did he make???

if you hear a royalty free song on youtube, there’s approximately an 80% chance Kevin Macleod wrote it.

here’s some you’ve almost definitely heard:

for those wondering, yes, he also made THE generic royalty free song that was EVERYWHERE in 2014.

He has a Patreon!

And he doesn’t even make a 1000$ per month!

also, his site incompetech.com also has graph paper generators, if you’re in need of that. It has any kind of graph paper - INCLUDING hex paper, you tabletop gamers out there! (or knitting paper if you’re into that)

HOHOHOHO?

Y'all, I’ve been a fan of Kevin MacLeod for YEARS. I can identify his music within two seconds. He’s a fucking genius and he deserves all the love and credit and money people can give.

He scored invader zim AND xiaolin showdown

New dream house plan: An underground home in the middle of a city, with the aboveground part set up as a public park where people are free to be and spend time as they please.

A crude cross-section depiction of a city with half the drawing aboveground, the other half underground. Aboveground are city buildings with a park in the middle, and underground the section precisely below the park has a tunnel, which leads to an underground apartment. The apartment is furnished, with a bed, storage, and a ladder leading ot the tunnel. The artist, depicted as a stick figure, is sitting triumphantly on the bed.ALT

There would naturally be more than one escape route from the residence (only illustrating one tunnel here to simplify the diagram for clarity), but the lid at each entrance (protedted by a discreet locking mechanism, naturally) would be disguised as a manhole cover. So instead of being aware of there being a little comfy underground apartment beneath the park, people would only know me as the guy who is sometimes seen climbing in/out of the sewer systems.

Two panels, both depicting the artist as a crude stick figure. In the first, the artist is standing and waving, saying "I had fun but I gotta go home now", with a manhole cover behind him on the background. In the second panel, the artist has removed the cover and is climbing down into the hole in the ground. Above this is the text "into the hole I go".ALT

I hear you and I raise you by aboveground part being fake cemetery for goths to hang out. And you could just pop in and out of different graves.

fuck that’s awesome too.

Perhaps having both and an underground tunnel between them, the entrance hidden in both apartments behind a bookshelf. Even the people who know about one secret apartment won’t know about the other.

Probably what bothers me the most in media is how being ‘just friends’ is seen as something bad, something nobody wants. The classic downtrodden expression of ’we’re just friends,’ like it’s a failure. Why is friendship seen as a step, not a final goal? Why can’t we see deep friendships between people on TV and not have it portrayed as 'not enough’? There are so many types of love, man, and every single one of those is enough.

Edit: Since this is getting a lot of attention, I just want to clarify I’m annoyed at how, traditionally, romantic relationships are seen as the 'final step’ and friendships/platonic relationships are seen as the lesser option. Friendship is never the lesser option.

"no one has died" because of feeding USAID to the woodchipper, Elon claimed. In this devastating piece the NYT went out and learned some of their names and stories: Achol Deng, an 8-year-old gir, was also infected with HIV at birth and likewise remained alive because of American assistance. Then in January, Achol lost her ID card, and there was no longer a case worker to help get her a new card and medicines; she doo became sick and died, said Labani. Yes, this may eventually save money for US taxpayers. How much? The cost of first-line HIV medications to keep a person alive is less than 12 cents a day. asked Labani if he had ever heard of Musk. He had not, so I explained that Musk is the world's wealthiest man and has said that no one is dying because of USAID cuts. "That is wrong," Labani said, sounding surpised that anyone could be so oblivious. "He should come to grass roots." Another household kept alive by American aid was that of Jenniver Inyaa, a 35-year-old- single mom, and her 5-year-old son, Evan Anzoo, both of them HIV-positive. Last month, after the aid shutdown, Inyaa became sick and died, and a week later Evan died as well, according to David Iraa Simon, a community health work who assisted them. Decisions by billionaires in Washington quickly cost the lives of a mother and her son.ALT

Do you understand what I’m saying?“ shouted Moist. "You can’t just go around killing people!”

“Why Not? You Do.” The golem lowered his arm.

“What?” snapped Moist. “I do not! Who told you that?”

“I Worked It Out. You Have Killed Two Point Three Three Eight People,” said the golem calmly.

“I have never laid a finger on anyone in my life, Mr Pump. I may be–– all the things you know I am, but I am not a killer! I have never so much as drawn a sword!”

I suddenly understand why jewelry is expensive

Hopefully people will start to realize why trades in general are so expensive. You’re paying for someone’s experience to make a good finished product that takes skill and years of practice.

However there is also a giant gap that needs to be filled in trades. As people are aging out of jobs like tailors, carpenters, bookbinders, leatherworkers, etc, there aren’t enough young people going INTO the trades to repopulate the jobs.

Please. Please. Consider going into trades.

These are the kinds of jobs people “fall into,” because they aren’t visible, and are never talked about.

Kids never grow up telling people they want to be a bookbinder. They don’t know they even exist. And schools never ever present them as valid options. And if they do talk about them, they are treated as invalid compaired to NFL Linebacker, President, and Brain Surgeon. After all “jewelry maker” is something people do to supplement their “burger flipping” income, and not an extension of blacksmithing.

But that’s the crux of it, isn’t it? Crafting and trade skills are an extension of artistic skills, which are often seen as completely invalid, and a total waist of time.

As the daughter of a professional bookbinder/book restorer, I had to reblog.

reblogging because I was in a course at college that covered Artisan skills such as these. I have friends who have since gone on to do Jewellery, Carpentry, Ceramics, Glasswork AND Blacksmithing. Ironically I ‘fell into’ comics.

windows to Artisan jobs are still around, the rising interest of upcycling and restoration has brought young folk into doing them.

Boosting because Artisan trades should be valued and carried on.
