Inktober 2024 — Day 20 — Uncharted

Due to real life events, I needed to take some time to myself. Though I ended up taking a bit more than I had planned, I’m slowly getting back into things. I’ll try to be more diligent about the rest of the prompts, at least more so than last year’s final prompt.

Day Twenty took a much more obscure path, like some of the other drawings I’ve done this year, mostly because my original idea had more to it. Long story short, it was going to be two characters flying over or exploring uncharted lands or seas, but I couldn’t get the poses right, and making the backgrounds would have taken even more time to do, and I’m trying not to make these to daunting. Regardless, I’m proud of the end result, and I’m especially happy that I get to draw these two characters for the first time. It took a lot of time drawing Hawks’s wings and Charizard in particular. Friede was the easy child so to speak.

My friends and I have been watching Pokémon Horizons and I remember when I first saw Friede, he strangely reminded me of Hawks from My Hero Academia. Maybe it was the jacket, maybe it was how two of them were frequently flying, but I think it was the attitude that solidified it. They both seem very laid back at first glance but the more you see them in action, the more you know how serious they take their respective jobs. They both also work hard to help and protect others, though Hawks does so in a much larger scale. It’s also interesting to see how different the two are, especially in how much freedom they have, or lack there of. Because one was able to choose the direction their life went while the other had little to no choice due to outside factors, despite how the latter seems to have more power than the other. Friede’s job as a Rising Volt Tackler gives him more freedom while Hawks’s job as a Pro Hero strangely keeps his wings clipped… I’m sorry I couldn’t help myself, I’ll just see my self out. :P

Inktober 2024 — Day 19 — Ridge

I know I’m way behind and it’s not October anymore, but I’ll still be continuing this until it’s done. I may end up sharing other unrelated drawings/ideas in between prompts, just a heads up. (Really, the dates I put on the sketches are just for consistency at this point XD)

So this prompt was one I struggled on. I know a ridge is a kind of mountain, but I couldn’t think of any ideas for that. I’ve already done hiking and nothing else was coming to mind. Eventually I went with more “raised earth” idea and knew I wanted to do something with Toph from AtLA. I thought of other earth related characters, and while there are many great characters fitting that theme, my bias showed and I return back to Voltron.

This is the first time I’ve drawn Hunk, and I’m pretty happy with it. Some proportions are off, but I still like how he came out. I did initially plan to have him reacting in fear from Toph’s earthbending, but the more I thought about it, the more I felt like he would be more in awe than afraid. And of course Toph is very proud that she gets to show off.

Inktober 2024 — Day 18 — Drive

Okay, so you know that meme where you draw three comfort characters in a car all looking grumpy and the reference has Goofy driving, Patrick Star in the passenger seat, and Fluttershy in the back? Well that’s what inspired this! I finally got a chance to try it myself.

I actually drew four characters: Galo Thymos, Izuku Midoriya, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Smokescreen (specifically from Transformers Prime). These four have been my go to comfort characters for a while. Shadow in particular has been my favorite for as long as I can remember! My friend actually suggested I draw Smokescreen’s expression up in the corner to make sure it’s conveyed that he is the car they’re driving and that was the right call! (On a side note, I know technically Smokescreen doesn’t have a back seat in TFP since he’s a race car, but I’m giving him one this time)

The story behind the drawing itself is that Izuku once again has broken his hand and needed someone to pick him up. Galo and Smokescreen go to pick him up while Shadow just hangs out in the back. I am really happy with how I was able to convey everyone’s emotions and current states. It was also just a fun excuse to draw some of my favorite characters.

Inktober 2024 — Day 17 — Journal

So instantly when I saw the “Journal” prompt I thought of Izuku and his notebooks, so of course I had to do another Izuku in Twisted Wonderland idea. This time it’s with his two new best friends, Ace and Deuce. Originally I was going to draw the scene in the classroom like in Twisted Wonderland’s Lessons, but I couldn’t get the art style quite right. So I changed it to them walking across campus, likely after learning something new in class.

I imagine this is the first time Ace and Deuce have seen and heard Izuku in one of his “muttering moments”, so they’re likely feeling a mix of confusion, intrigue, and concern. Neither of them really catch what Izuku is saying. Ace will definitely poke fun at Izuku for being a bit of a nerd, but not as harshly as Izuku’s been teased in the past by other kids (yes, I’m looking at you Katsuki). As for Deuce, he’s concerned but also impressed with how fast Izuku’s talking and writing. At least now the both of them know who to go to for class notes.

I also wanted to include the muttering across the page just like in the My Hero Academia anime. I really hope I wrote it correctly (or at least I didn’t mess it up too bad). I worry I might have made Izuku a little too short compared to Ace and Deuce, I can’t really tell, but oh well. I also gave Izuku a Night Raven school uniform so he’d match. All in all I really like this scene and it just make me happy to look at. :)

Inktober 2024 — Day 16 — Grungy

This was another prompt I struggled with. Not just because of the word, but because I wasn’t sure who I wanted to draw. I tried thinking of grungy characters in terms of either dirty or rough looking characters, or grungy in terms of grunge music, but nothing was sticking. Then I stumbled upon grunge fashion, (which actually looks right up my alley) so I thought why not draw that. And who better to draw fashion for than characters from two doll series? I haven’t drawn Monster High or Ever After High in a while and drawing them together is a match made in heaven.

I chose Howleen Wolf because she’s my absolute favorite ever since I watched the 13 Wishes Movie. I feel like she’d be interested in grunge fashion, especially the dark colors, long baggy pants, and flannel shirts (Not sure how Clawdeen would react though). I kept her hair the way it is in her long hairstyle since it didn’t feel too out of place. As for Raven, I think she’d at least try grunge fashion once in her life. Though the clothes I picked for her didn’t turn out the way I thought it would in my head, (maybe my favoritism was showing) she still looks great, and I always wanted to give her a long braid just to give her outfit an extra punch.

All in all I like how these two came out, especially Howleen. Though I am certainly not a fashion designer, I may end up trying this again in the future, if only to get more practice.

Inktober 2024 — Day 15 — Guidebook

Returning to our favorite PlayStation Heroes (or at least my favorites XD), I was wracking my brain how to do something for this day’s prompt. Eventually I thought, “Hey, the Thievius Raccoonus is basically a guidebook, right?” and I ran with it. I am proud I was able to get the writing on the front cover done pretty well since doing typography by hand is tricky for me. I’m also happy with how each hero turned out, especially with their expressions.

I actually had two ideas for this scenario. One is as seen above with Sly reading the book as Ratchet and Jak peak over his shoulders, one intrigued, the other slightly judging (or however you’d like to interpret it). The second idea would have been Ratchet and Jak reading the book themselves with Sly behind them either panicking, seething, or about to knock them out with his cane. While it was a more entertaining idea, I didn’t go with it because, A) it was a lot more complicated and I had already made up my mind with this scene, and B) I feel like Ratchet and Jak would at least respect Sly’s heirloom since it’s from his ancestors and the strongest connection he has with his family. That’s just my thoughts at least.

Inktober 2024 — Day 14 — Roam

Alright, I’ll be honest, this is another drawing that is more loosely based on the prompt than others. I just really wanted to do another Chibi Mo Dao Zu Shi drawing. This time I’m returning to my idea with Marinette being Wei Ying and Lan Zhan’s niece/god daughter. I imagine they’re just out on a walk, no real destination in mind, just enjoying the day.

I’m starting to get better at drawing in a chibi style, and I am very happy with how this came out! I was worried about making sure Marinette looked younger than Wei Ying and Lan Zhan, so I’m glad it came out really well. I don’t really have much else to say about the drawing other than, I love it!

I guess I can talk more about the idea itself. Like I mentioned in the Passport drawing, I imagine Marinette goes to visit her uncles/godparents every summer ever since she was little. At some point, she started going by herself since her parents had to run the bakery. Thankfully she’s a well behaved child, much more than Wei Ying was at least. She’d likely learn some cultivation skills, but not as strictly as other students since she’s only visiting. I could also see her learning how to play the flute or a string instrument like either Wei Ying or Lan Zhan. Little things like that to make her visit enjoyable and relaxing. I don’t think Wei Ying or Lan Zhan would ever visit Paris, at least not unless something really big happened that they had to go.

Also, it’s debatable whether Wei Ying and Lan Zhan know Marinette is Ladybug or not. Like they’re smart, but they don’t see what’s going on in Paris. And I feel like Marinette would be trying to keep it a secret, but on the other hand maybe they can sense the power of her miraculous? It’s definitely something to think about. What do you guys think?

Inktober 2024 — Day 13 — Horizon

So I’ve been watching Pokémon Horizons with my best friends and it’s so good! I love the new characters and how they travel between regions so frequently. The animation as always is amazing. I’ve only watched what’s been released in English dub (on Netflix), so I’m trying my best to avoid spoilers.

I will say, right now, I’m predicting Amethio to be similar to Zuko, which is why I wanted to draw the two together. I just have this gut feeling that Amethio will eventually end up changing sides, whether by his own decisions or he gets betrayed and has no choice but to turn to the Rising Volt Tacklers (my friends joke that the RVT will basically kidnap/adopt him XD).

As for the drawing, I really like how this came out. I don’t do a lot of landscape drawing (does this count as landscape?), especially in black and white, but I think I did alright for a sunset at sea scene. For little details, I included a Wingull and Pelipper, and apparently there are “flying dolphin fish” in the world of AtLA. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched the full series, or it could be from Legend of Korra which I haven’t watched yet.

Inktober 2024 — Day 12 — Remote

And here’s another Matoi Siblings drawing already. Immediately when I thought of “Remote”, it made me think of siblings fighting over a tv remote, and I wanted to draw Galo and Ryuko as siblings again so I thought why not.

I really wanted the pose to be more action based rather than just them just pushing each other or holding the remote out of reach. I know for a fact that Ryuko and Galo wouldn’t be afraid of rough housing. Eventually I was able to figure out a pose that felt like a good balance of anime exaggeration and physically believable. Though let’s be honest, things being “believable” is not really a concern with these two.

Inktober 2024 — Day 11 — Snacks

Here’s another crossover of mine that I really love! I’m sure I’ve already gone on and on about how much I love Promare, and recently I’ve been watching Kill La Kill. Thus, this idea came to be: The Matoi Siblings.

(Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen either Promare or Kill La Kill!)

To make a long story short: After Galo loses his parents in the house fire when he was a kid (because I’m like 99% sure that’s what happened even though they never explicitly said it in the movie) he is taken in by Isshin Matoi who was an old friend of Galo’s parents. Galo becomes the adoptive older brother to Ryuko Matoi, and while the two are vastly different, they get along much more than people expect. Years later when Isshin dies, Galo takes Ryuko in for a year or two until she enters Honnōji Academy and heads out on her own (the timeline’s a bit skewed, but not too different).

I imagine that, while Galo and Ryuko are very different characters, they’d be good siblings and care about one another. They have a fair amount of similarities: They’re both brash and a bit hot headed, very loud and tend to be dramatic (especially during action scenes), but they also care deeply about those they hold dear, have unwavering determination and drive, and they push themselves to be stronger and to fight for what they believe in. It’s just that while Galo pushes himself to saves lives from fires, Ryuko’s on a mission for vengeance. This is for sure not the last time I’ll be doing a drawing based on these two, so keep your eyes peeled.
