Florian Gadsby on Instagram: "My YouTube film this Sunday continues my exploration of testing new stoneware clay bodies and incorporating iron spangles, ground up hammer scale, into them. In this instance, I’m blending down two course clays with my usual, ES80 stoneware, both of which previously, when fired raw, gave me lovely results albeit for some cracking in some places… so hopefully this mixture gives me the best of both worlds. You can watch the fully narrated video by following the link in my profile’s biography. I won’t make many pots with such a mix of materials. Rather, they’re thrown to show in combination with all my other wares, to stand out as individual pieces, punctuating the lot and breaking up the otherwise glassy green, blue and white tones. Although there’s six here, the last thrown, the piece on the left at the very end, was scrapped as proportionally it was miles off.

The others work. There’s a balance between the squared-off lower section and the sloping out walls, I think one easy visual to pick up to tell whether they work or not, (that means whether I like them or not), is restricting the lip to never flare out further than the straight part underneath, instead they need to be more or less inline, give or take a few millimetres.

The last one I threw flared out rather a lot and someh Florian Gadsby, High Iron, Small Batch, Small Batches, Last One, To Tell, Stoneware, Meant To Be, Pick Up

Florian Gadsby on Instagram: "Refining a rather thickly potted store jar with a substantial, overhanging lid. This is moment I long for when creating pottery, trimming clay at this perfect leather hard state, the curls of clay spiralling away, the sharp tungsten blades slicing away long ribbons of clay. Each component acting like a chuck for the other helps streamline this process. In a way, it’s why I’ve adopted this style of lid for practically all of the pots I create, it’s become one of the most recognisable aspects to my work, although in this instance the lid slightly too thick—sometimes when watching these videos back, and scrolling through old footage, I spot things that had I been making the same pot now, I’d change. #pottery #clay #handmade #potterywheel #trimming" Pottery Trimming, Florian Gadsby, Pottery Inspo, Pottery Pot, Pottery Clay, Pottery Wheel, Clay Ceramics, Acting, Ceramics
