Haiti Hero of Independence Jean-Jacques Dessalines (20 September 1758 – 17 October 1806) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution. Initially regarded as Governor-General, Dessalines later named himself Emperor Jacques I of Haiti (1804–1806). He is regarded as a founding father of Haiti.

It's January 1st, Haitian Independence Day. France had ruled the colony of Saint-Domingue as part of its empire since 1659. However, in 1791, a group of enslaved persons, inspired by the American and French Revolutions, began an epic struggle for freedom that culminated in victory on this day in 1804.
