Scuff-sand with 120 grit to remove old shiny finish and roughen up surface for better paint adherence  3.  Paint on a layer of primer and then scuff-sand by hand with 220 grit. Tip 1: Don’t skip the prep work - if you have new cabinets, lightly sand and prime those suckers and you’re good to go. If you’re painting existing cabinets - this tip is extra important! Make sure to clean those babies (I use a degreaser) and sand the clear coat off before priming. If you have previously paint cabinets, you’ll still want to clean them, but you’ll only need to do a light sanding to roughen up the paint a bit before priming.
