New Hampshire ~ The state's most famous natural rock formation ~ The Old Man of the Mountain. His rock face is 25 feet wide and measures 40 feet from chin to forehead. Geologic events carved this profile into the granite ledges 200 million years ago. (The face fell off in 2003.) I saw it during a trip to the White Mountains as a child, and remember it fondly.

The leaves in New Hampshire, at mid elevations, were definitely at peak this past weekend! We got up early and did the short hike up to Square Ledge near Pinkham Notch, just in time to see this nasty storm rising up the valley and over Mt. Washington. The muted light from the sunrise behind me was just enough to make the colors really show!
