tsugumichi kaneshiro’s name, a short analysis

image

don’t know who he is? ⬆️ now you do!! he got namedropped in deep cover through a news article, so he’s one of two side characters with a full name written in kanji (hinako mukuhara being the second) so i thought i’d try my hand at guessing what it might mean since nobody else has.

TSUGUMICHI -> 亜道 (jisho)

亜 essentially means “second to,” or more simply “inferior” / 道 means “path” or “road,” but can also mean something like “morality” or “teachings”. the characters here have some other meanings aside from those, but these are the ones i’ll focus on

basically, his name means “inferior path” or “inferior morality.” which like is kinda obvious... he’s a guy who kidnaps & kills children of course his morality is inferior, or of course the road he went down was inferior.

also check out kotoko's 12th interrogation answer. lol

KANESHIRO -> 兼城 (jisho)

兼 essentially means “simultaneous” or something like that, but i don’t have many thoughts on it, so i’ll leave you with checking out the link. / however, 城 is fairly simple, it just means “castle”!

castles are sort of a reflection on their (not just tsugumichi, but his family in general) higher social status, as well as how they’re “protected” by said status from whatever they did wrong. castling is also a move in chess, where the rook sort of “swaps” position with the king, so the king is pushed more into the corner, protected from central threats. which is basically what his father did for him, right?

i don’t know how to end this. his name could actually be adou kaneshiro instead of tsugumichi. but im more used to one than the other

[Repeating info I left as a reply]

The kanji is different, but the ‘kane’ in kaneshiro sounds like the Japanese word for money お金 ([o]kane)
probably bc he comes from a wealthy family

Also yeah, the fun of Japanese names is that just bc you know the kanji not even native speakers can always tell how its meant to be read
you just cross your fingers and hope their parents didn’t pick some obscure kirakira reading…
(fun fact this was actually discussed on an episode of milgram radio, apparently Hanae Natsuki and Yamanaka had to rely on katakana for Mikoto’s last name bc the kanji for Kayano is weird and hard to read/remember 茅野 and 萱野 seem to be more common spellings than 榧野))

With the tariffs, prices aren't going down across the board. Besides, $450 is still cheaper than the competition.

1) I’m not from the US, its around the same price or more expensive in EU/UK/Canada (cheaper in Japan tho)

If it was like especially expensive only in the US then I’d agree its only down to tariffs

2) I’m not actually bothered by the console’s price, it’s a lot but I mean ps5 Pro was like $700, switch is claiming it can do 4k 120fps this is what consoles cost

But when I say “switch 2 is expensive” it’s not just the box itself. Ppl expected the big games to go up to 70 dollars but $80 for Mario kart?? In this economy???

Not to mention how many new features are only useful if you buy Nintendo switch online, the requirement for special SD cards, the paying to upgrade your switch 1 games to the switch 2 version (I’m not as bothered by this one as long as the price isn’t too high but like it adds up…)

Also that switch 2 tour demo thing costing money at all??

[Insert the section of the Jenny Nicholson Star Wars Hotel video where she explains that you shouldn’t charge luxury prices if you’re going to use the Spirit Airlines nickle and diming approach to pricing]

I don’t even remember if the Nintendo Kinect camera is sold separately or not

3) what they showed us was cool but tbh there’s nothing i couldn’t live without (especially if you don’t have NSO like me, so even that cool looking Mario kart wouldn’t be something I pick up)

It looks good… if you pick it up in a year’s time when there’s more games

I’m not an economist or trying to suggest a grand protest

I was just giving my thoughts on the direct “that’s neat, now let’s wait until its a better deal”

nintendo switch 2 looks cool but kinda expensive
Everyone promise not to buy it for 1 year until they panic and drop the price like they did with the 3DS pretty please 🙏

huh, seems like is-the-snake-video-cute silently deactivated… shame because they had a good write up on snake venom I was going to look at for a milgram theory….

One of my current favourite things about the gnosia fandom is that Raqio is popular… But ppl never forget how consistent they’re a jerk to everyone. Like I’ve seen multiple ppl affectionately call them “the asshole”

So now one of my worries for the upcoming anime is that bc a viewer is more limited than a player and the fandom will expand, these two things will cause Raqio to be popular…. at the expense of ppl imagining/writing them way too cinnamon roll-y and forgetting even when they try to help ppl they’re doing it through this asshole filter

Like we’ll see arguments where a raqio ‘fan’ is upset at another fan for thinking they’d be meaner about something

Anyway I cannot believe Gnosia the video game (highly recommend!) is getting an anime with an original protagonist. Or that the G isn't silent.

What do you mean the G isn't silent??

Screenshot of the official gnosia website with the title in English and JapaneseALT

So see how underneath the title GNOSIA is some Japanese characters? These are the characters グノーシア and they show that it is pronounced 'gu nou shi a'
that is to say, with a Hard G sound

This is because 'gnosia' comes from 'gnosticism' which is from the greek word γνωστικός/gnōstikós and thus is a loanword to both Japanese and English

As part of anglicisation, it was made to follow the 'silent G' rule
so is pronounced Nosticism (whereas the related word 'agnostic' which had an a at the start meant the g sound was unaffected)

But Japan doesn't have the letter G let alone rules about silent letters (devoicing certain vowel sounds is a thing but its different so shh)
so it got brought over as グノーシス主義 Gunoushisu shugi (shugi is a japanese word meaning doctrine/ism so this is literally 'gnosis-ism' aka gnosticism)

TL;DR
Every time they say 'gnosia' in the upcoming anime, expect to hear
Gunosia with a pronounced
G

"Gnosticism" had a "G" in the original Greek?

so idk much about greek but I tried looking it up and γνωστικός generally seems to be pronounced with a g
like
Goo-nosti-kos (sometimes a bit softer it sound more like oo-nosti-kos)

which is kinda similar to japanese グ/gu
