This mod received one of the 2022 Cacowards on Doomworld in the Gameplay mod category! |
Voxel Doom is a gameplay mod originally made for the GZDoom source port that replaces the sprites of all monsters, items and most decorations in Doom and Doom II with voxel-based 3D models. It was created by modder Daniel Peterson (Cheello) and first released on Mod DB on August 17, 2022, having been announced on the Doomworld forums two days earlier.[1]
The mod received widespread attention after its launch both inside and outside the Doom community, with many gaming news sites and YouTube channels covering it due to the novelty of Doom's 2D monster sprites being translated into three-dimensional models using voxels rather than polygons, which allows each pixel to be represented by a single voxel, creating a 3D rendition that is highly accurate to the original art. Though there had been earlier attempts at utilizing voxels in Doom, dating back as far as 2004 in the form of the Doom voxel project, Voxel Doom represents the most complete effort to date. All of the included voxel models in the mod were created by Cheello by hand using the editor MagicaVoxel as his main tool, while Nash Muhandes handled the necessary ZScript coding work for GZDoom integration.
The original Voxel Doom was awarded one of the 2022 Cacowards for best gameplay mod. It also claimed sixth place on the Top 10 list of the best mods of the year on Mod DB.[2]
An updated version named Voxel Doom II was released on August 1, 2023. It contains the contents of the original Voxel Doom as well as the additional assets for Doom II, while also providing a Voxel Doom options menu inside the regular options menu, which allows for various effects of the mod to be toggled.
The Woof! source port added support for Voxel Doom in November 2023 through the integration of a CPU-based voxel renderer provided by Andrew Apted (andrewj), and in April 2024, developer Ketmar Dark released a custom version of Voxel Doom for the K8Vavoom source port.[3][4]

Content[edit]
The mod does not contain models for any of the projectiles fired by monsters or the player, except for the in-flight rocket, or any of the player's first-person weapon sprites, though models for the weapon pickups are present. Also, while the gun puffs created by hitscan attacks impacting with walls are voxelized, blood splatters are not. Voxel Doom II also voxelizes the explosion caused by the mancubus' fireballs impacting with walls. All mobjs that are not replaced by voxel models will be rendered with their regular 2D sprites in-game.
The original Voxel Doom did not include the assets added by Doom II; these were later provided in Voxel Doom II (written below in bold).
