Let’s make your defense a little better and let’s do it with footwork. I get into a variety of fundamental ways you can start efficiently unifying your defense and footwork. All your basics are covered here, punches and kicks. Enjoy!

I love same side attacks, for most of the time I’ve spent training it was always emphasized. Both as an efficient option and as an elusive one. The pattern of standard striking is established, right-left, left-right common practice is that exchange. However if we opt to follow up on the same side we break conventional timing and make our attacks harder to perceive. It’s a super valuable concept that is criminally underused. Check it out.

Training an elusive lead leg doesn’t just mean offensively. It means developing the defensive skills to not lose this foundational pillar of our entire game. I even detail some of the more traditional kicks and how it teaches us to deal with a modern problem like the calf kick. Check it out.

Spin Kicks are fun, flashy and inherently high risk. Landing one can change quite a lot but so can whiffing. Here I give you some very low risk and easy to employ counters to punish that pesky spin kicker in your life.

The working title for this blog was always ‘A Stiff Jab’ it’s a punch I’ve focused on developing more than any other. What’s also come with that is an understanding that there are other tools you can Jab with. In fact there are count, four Jabs available in striking. I explain through the Savate lens I learned this method from. Enjoy!

While kicking people in the dome is one of my favorite things to do, we cannot discount the importance of striking below the shoulder line. Whether it was my BFS instructor Prof Salem Assli, my BJJ MMA Instructor Sensei Erik Paulson, every last one of my instructors spent time emphasizing working the body. Here’s just a handful of ways you can find easy routes to strike the body. Check it out!

By: Ben Amanna

Sucks TikTok is dead here in the U.S. cause that’s how I came across this amazing video. YouTuber Ben Amanna got to train with Dmitry Bivol ahead of Bivol’s fight with Beterbiev. Opportunity of a lifetime. If there was one guy who’s brain I’d like to pick about boxing, Bivol would be near the top of the list.

We back! This video provides a base of techniques and strategies you can use to efficiently kick while retreating or draw an opponent onto your kicks. This is an advanced strategy that requires good timing, understanding of distance and proper footwork. These aren’t all the examples but he’s a nice mix to get you started. Check it out!

Theme sparring! If you aren’t doing it, you should. We all have habits and theme sparring is one of the best ways to not only pick up on your bad habits, but force you into scenarios where you must use skills and techniques that might not be your preference. This makes you not only better offensively but defensively as well. This makes for a great combination of eye training and offense skill building. Check it out!

BFS has a uniquely restrictive rule set, so working within it takes an understanding of what you cannot do and what you might be able to do instead. Kick catching is out, scoops are in. This is also great for anyone working within restrictive kickboxing rulesets. Check it out!
