Black Knights

Another unit for my Age of Sigmar Undead army is complete.  These are Black Knights.  These are for Legions of Nagash or they can be used as Hexwraiths for my Nighthaunt army.  The reality is I will likely never use these for AoS but I have already used them for Warlords of Erehwon.

This is a really great set by Games Workshop.  I have now built this set as the Black Knights and the Hexwraiths.  I think they look much better as the Black Knights.  I might need another box.

Dreadblade Harrows

This will be the last of the Nighthaunt posts for a while.  These two Dreadblade Harrow models are the last of my assembled Nighthaunts.  I probably will not be getting back to these for a while.  Even though these have been in the paint queue for a while I have used them in a couple of games and I like them.  These really shine when you make one your army general.  I think the models are great.  They were really easy to build and to paint.

Darrakar Guardian of Souls

This is Darrakar Guardian of Souls with Mortality Glass.  This is another model that was a limited edition for some special event.  I can't remember what the event was.  This guy actually gets some new gear and spells and, therefore, is almost worth the spendy price tag.  I have a couple of extra bit left over from this that will allow be to convert an extra Guardian of Souls figure from Soul Wars giving me all three options.

Garkorr Bladegheist Revenant

This is Garkorr the Bladegheist Revenant.  This model is a limited edition and I think it was a store anniversary model or something like that.  The model is very cool but it is not even a special character.  It is just a VERY expensive battleline unit model.  The unit doesn't even have a leader.  That seems like a huge waste to me so I have decided I will use this as a Knight of Shrouds since I only have the mounted version.

Nighthaunt Hexwraiths

For some reason I forgot to document these on the blog.  The are Nighthaunt Hexwraiths and I painted these a while back.  These are basically stock models though I did remove some of the extra danglly skulls.  I've used these in a few battles with mixed results.

Thorns of the Briar Queen

I started playing Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire at the end of 2018.  I really enjoyed it and for a few months we played pretty regular.  Around that time I bought the Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault set because it had an awesome Nighthaunt faction that I had to have.  The Thorns of the Briar Queen is a great set of miniatures and I was really excited to try then in WU and AoS.  But then the wheels fell off the Shadespire gaming and I had lots o stuff in the works for the Nighthaunts.  I started painting them last year but as so often happens with me I failed to finish them and they went into a project box.  The Great Lock-Down has got me pulling out lots of old projects and getting me to finish them up.  I am really happy to finally have these in the painted collection and ready for action...someday.

Nighthaunt Endless Spells

I love the Nighthaunts.  I think they have one of the coolest aesthetics of the Age of Sigmar universe.  I really love undead armies in general but the ghosts and spirits are just creepy and cool.  I really like the concept of the endless spells introduced with the latest edition of AoS but I must admit that they are only marginally effective and mostly a gimmick.  Even so I love the models and I bought the Nighthaunt set as soon as it came out.  At the time I wanted to do something different with the paint and this really slowed my progress to the point of not working on them for more than a year.  When I got back to them I decided to keep things simple and just get them ready for the table.  In the end they turned out to be very easy to paint and a very quick project.  I am kind of wonder what took me so long to get these done.

Mortis Engine

When I first jumped into Age of Sigmar, back when the 2nd edition was released, I was really excited by the Nighthaunts.  Before I knew anything about the army I bought a bunch of stuff.  One of the things I bought was the Malignants Start Collecting set.  I mean, this stuff HAD to be part of the army right?  Well the Spirit Hosts were and so were the Hexwraiths, but not the Mortis Engine.  So the coolest part of the set was not usable, damn.  So it sat for a long time.  About 6 months ago I started work on it but it was quickly set aside.  During the lock down I have been focusing on finishing some of the neglected projects.  I am really glad to have this completed.  The random army selection from the General's Handbook 2019 should make this easier to include in the army.  I don't play competitively so I might just take it no matter what.

Completed Chainrasp Hordes

I knew from the beginning that my Nighthaunt army would have the Chainrasp Horde as the main Battleline unit.  For this I needed lots of Chainrasps and I was lucky enough to acquire three starter sets of models.

I now have 60 painted models divided into three 20-man units.  These have been absolutely fantastic in every game I have played.  These are a must have as far as I am concerned.

Glavewraith Stalkers

This is my 10 man (ghost) unit of Glavewraith Stalkers.  When Soul Wars was initially releasted this was the unit that got my attention.  The models were really creepy and unique and I was really excited to paint them and get them on the table.  I still like the models, especially the easy build set, but in game terms they are a bust.  I have used them in almost all my games and they never seem to earn their points back.  I have used them as line troop and as flankers.  Nothing seems to work.  I understand why they are rarely used in Nighthaunt armies.  Sadly I will likely retire them soon.

Myrmourn Banshees

I have finished my Myrmourn Banshees for my Nighthaunt army.  I have used them a couple of times but so far they have not done much.  I see many players are running 12 of these and they might be more useful in a large unit.  The models are really amazing.  They are some for the best on the Nighthaunt line which is filled with amazing models.

Chainrasp Horde

The Chainrasp Horde is the heart of the Nighthaunt army, or at least, it should be.  These are some really great figures and the units look fantastic.  In game terms these guys are great.  Keep some key heroes close and go to it.

One controversy around these figures has to do with price an availability.  Since the Nighthaunt army is an entirely new army initially this key unit was only available in the Soul Wars box set.  This is not really an issue has GW always has a separate model set ready to go after a new edition release.  Everyone knew that it was only a matter of time before you could buy these outside of the starter set.  There was also an expectation, based on previous GW practice, that the individual set of Chainrasps would be different from the Soul Wars models.  The expectation on the street was that this new kit would be 10 models and cost about $25-$30.  It was a huge shock when GW merely repackaged the exact same models from the Sould Wars set and priced them at $40 for 10!  Ouch!  I was lucky enough to purchase a couple of the Soul Wars Nighthaunt sets second hand but if I had had to buy these retail my army plans would be very different.  Sadly this is the only real mistake GW has made with the new Age of Sigmar edition.

Spirit Hosts

These are my Spirit Hosts.  These are a battleline unit for the Nighthaunts.  I have used these in my first two games and I really like them.  I can see why these are a popular option.  The models, however, are a major pain in the ass to build.  I thought after building them that I would never add any more to the army but after using them I am sure I will need more.

Grimghast Reapers

More of my Nighthaunt project is ready.  Today its time for the Grimghast Reapers.  This is the first battleline unit for the army.  I am not very experienced with AoS so I don't really understand the ins and outs of the game.  This seems to be the most popular battleline unit for the NH army and I really don't understand why.  Many local players are using these exclusively in their armies and recent national events have seen Death armies using lots of these.  I have used this unit in one game and it did well but I did not think they were worth the nearly double point cost over the Chainrasps.

When I built these I decided to leave out the heads and just go with an empty cowl look.  I think these look really creepy without the heads and it fits more with the grim reaper style.
